Historia
Through the last 150 years of American history—from the post-reconstruction South and the mythic stories of cowboys in the West, to the present-day controversy over NFL protests and the backlash against the rise of women in politics—Ijeoma Oluo exposes the devastating consequences of white male supremacy on women, people of color, and white men themselves. Mediocre investigates the real costs of this phenomenon in order to imagine a new white male identity, one free from racism and sexism.

Historia
In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

Examples of those who changed history
Revisado: 01-24-25
I think these examples were pulled from her blog and I found the book a bit disjointed, but I like the idea of individuals making a difference. The stories center around educators and inequality. When I did know something on the subject (I was an educator too) I found the stories seemed incomplete or offered an interpretation that I didn't have. In general I think she put out an educational and admirable piece. At times the author, who was the narrator, seems overly exited with dramatic pauses. I feel we all would benefit from knowing we can make a difference.

Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

One of my favorites of the year
Revisado: 01-24-25
This is a heartwarming story about a widower who has little left in his life but actually discovers his doppelganger who recently died. He is mistaken for him and ends up replacing him at his nursing home. While he originally tries to explain that he is Fred no one believes him, so he enjoys the meals and all that the nursing home has to offer, making friends with staff and clients alike. Always wanting a child but not able to have one, he now finds himself a father. In mending the relationship I found the story full of heart and wisdom. I love books like this.

New age aura's meet mystery
Revisado: 12-29-24
After a car accident, Ellie wakes up in the hospital to find that everyone seems to have colored auras around them. At first, she finds this overwhelming, but overtime she is able to control this "gift" and finds it helps her in diagnosing health concerns in people. When she does this for a detective's child, he asks if she could help the police with a serial killer case where woman are dying in the English countryside.
The narrator does a nice job.
As a person who wishes she had some type of new age talent, I found the mystery to something out of the ordinary and a fun listen. I plan to listen to the second book in the series soon.

Charlie knows he’s not the main character in his own story. He’s just another schmuck in the Ivy League looking to be somebody. He plays in a terrible jazz band, falls in love too easily, and struggles with the human being business. Written in a wry, comedic style, A Comedy of Nobodies: A Collection of Stories traces one fall semester in the lives of four typical but unforgettable university students who, as compensation for their existential anxieties, just want to feel understood.

College age angst
Revisado: 12-29-24
An episodic novel about Charlie, a poor student, at an Ivy League college. He's in a jazz band, like writing and psychology, and of course, girls. The chapters are humorous, and sad. It's only five hours and I could have listened longer as the stories were touching. I wish my boring college experiences had some of the color that his did.
I sometimes worry when an author narrates their own story but Ryan has a very pleasant voice and he really added to the tale. This make a fun listen, and as the three star rating say, it pretty good.

Historia
When Anna Hartley’s husband, Henry, calls her with a terrible, guilty confession, she can’t believe what she hears. It has to be a bad joke—the mild, predictable artist she married would never hurt a fly, let alone commit murder. But her confusion turns to horror when police find his body washed up on the banks of the Rio Grande.

Several main characters in a rundown motel
Revisado: 12-29-24
Cass, is the handymum, at the motel where she lives after her boyfriend broke up with her. Down on her luck she gets to know the group of people who live in this converted motel. There is Rosa who has an abusive husband, Henry, who rented it out for a studio but lived elsewhere, is found dead. At first everyone thought it was a suicide, but when police tell his wife it is murder, she comes to the motel to learn more about her husband and the life he was leading. The story centers on these three women.
The story has several twists and is told primarily from Cass's point of view. For some reason, and I don't think it is narrator's fault, but I have listened to several books with her narration and the characters always seem a bit whiny. I get a bit tired of listening to these character but the story kept me engaged. There are two narrators so the book moved along.
What I liked is that the lines between good and evil are complex. The nice characters, fall, and those that initially appear lacking, end up being, well, not heroes, but saviors. While the action in the story kept it moving along, it was the characters that held my attention. Although I only gave it three stars, I rate lower than most because I want the really outstanding books to stand out. This is, as three stars note, pretty good.

Historia
Eli Frieden lives in the most perfect town in the world: Serenity, New Mexico. In this idyllic place, every lawn is perfectly manicured, and everyone has a pool and a tree house. Honesty and integrity are valued above all else. The 30 kids who live there never lie--they know it's a short leap from that to the awful problems of other, less fortunate places. Then one day Eli bikes to the edge of the city limits, and something so crazy and unexpected happens, it changes everything.

Fun premise
Revisado: 12-15-24
A small, secluded town where twenty five children are kept in a rich community hides many secrets. As the children age they begin to question things and begin to explore and discover the town's secrets. There are multiple narrators which adds interest, Korman is one of my favorite children's writers as he comes up with such unusual plots.
Unfortunately, this is just the beginning in a series, but I guess that just means more fun listens are yet to come.

Irish folktale
Revisado: 12-15-24
The best part of this audiobook is the narration. The story has some interesting parts, but it is too long in that it seemed repetitive. There is a lot of thinking about sex that seems out of place in this quantity. The main character, a changling, grows up under a ruthless queen and is sent to find her daughter with her daughter's betrothed. She has grown up with this Prince who is in love her her. The princess is being held in a folk land that can only be entered on a full-moon. There our main character also finds a creature with a sword that the queen desires who falls in love with her as well. The story has some twists and turns as truth is hard to discern. I listened to the story because the narrator had a pleasing voice, but the story seemed to drag.

Hawthorn mystery
Revisado: 12-06-24
I've listened to the first five audiobooks in this mystery series and enjoyed them all. It makes sense to listen to this one first. Horowitz makes this seems so real in first person that I kept having to remind myself that is fiction and the author and "his" detective are fictional characters, Hawthorne is an unlikable character but with depth so one wants to understand his story. I enjoy how Horowitz so easily manipulates my emotions. He is a brilliant writer.
