Exhaustingly straight with few surprises
Revisado: 06-11-20
This is hard to review as it was a well-crafted and well-written story that often felt like a slog to get through. The whole thing feels written by and for the young, straight, white women of the new york publishing scene. which is to say, I've heard it before and don't find the relationships it describes particularly interesting. while it may be a revelation (or at least relatable) to the aforementioned demographic that certain types of men will turn out to be abusers and certain types of secrecy will turn out to be toxic, to those of us for whom this is old news, it's just another tedious journey through the ways white women attempt to absorb or shield themselves with white male power, only to be thwarted by it.

Historia
In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don't speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling. Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey's district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit - and her sister - before it's too late.

great literary suspense novel for tana french fans
Revisado: 05-04-20
A bit slow to start, but as I got to know the main character and the mystery built, I was hooked. Though I missed Tana French's dark wit and crackling prose, this was a solid pairing for her Dublin Murder Squad series, offering similar pleasures of plot and complex character development. The insight into (and sorrow for) North America's opioid crisis was a particular strength of this novel as well.

Historia
A week after her 41st birthday, the acclaimed poet Anne Boyer was diagnosed with highly aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. For a single mother living paycheck to paycheck who had always been the caregiver, the catastrophic illness was both a crisis and an initiation into new ideas about mortality and the gendered politics of illness. The Undying explores the experience of illness as mediated by digital screens, weaving in ancient Roman dream diarists, cancer hoaxers and fetishists, cancer vloggers, pro-pain "dolorists", and the many little murders of capitalism.

beautifully written but without insight
Revisado: 12-23-19
Boyer defends "telling" as righteous but reveals its limitations, resulting in a tightly controlled narrative.

Historia
It is expected to be an excursion like any other. There is nothing in the records to indicate that anything out of the ordinary will happen. A bus will take them to the mall. They will have an hour or so to look around. Perhaps buy something, or try the food. A minor traffic incident on the way back to the resort will provide some additional interest - but the tour rep has no reason to expect any trouble. Until he notices that one of his party is missing.

intriguing story asks questions it fails to answer
Revisado: 03-16-17
The writing is passable, story is intriguing if confusing w/many twists and turns that ultimately result in a dead end. instantly forgettable, sorry to say.

A major audiobook about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on Earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.
