Historia
Antony Beevor has written a completely updated and revised account of one of the most bitter and hard-fought wars of the 20th century. With new material gleaned from Russian archives and numerous other sources, this brisk and accessible audiobook (Spain's number-one best seller for 12 weeks) provides a balanced and penetrating perspective, explaining the tensions that led to this terrible overture to World War II and affording new insights into the war - its causes, course, and consequences.

Informative and balanced account
Revisado: 07-28-24
This book provided an informative and balanced account in English of the Spanish Civil War while also providing background for those not very familiar with Spain prior to the war. In addition to those interested specifically in the topic, I would also recommend the book to anyone interested in World War II, as the Spanish Civil War owing to the foreign states and military technology involved. I would have liked somewhat of an epilogue with more information on the Franco regime, but I suppose that is somewhat outside the scope of the book. For those not familiar with the geography of Spain, you will also want to find a good map of the country for reference (unfortunately this book does not have an accompanying PDF) as that will make following along much easier.

Historia
A complex and contradictory figure, Mussolini won the fascination of many statesmen and writers, and their wives. From his early years raised in the traditions of revolutionary Italian Socialism, to his violent execution by Communist partisans at the end of World War II, we watch Mussolini's power ambitions erode his political ideals, as he evolves from brilliant orator and journalist to empire-building dictator enforcing his authority by death squads.

Good book on a leader of the times who has often been overshadowed by his contemporaries. It was a sufficient length to tell the story of Mussolini without losing details or being too lengthy. Though some reviewers were critical of the reader, I grew to like her the more I listened to the book.

Historia
On June 19, 1864, just off the coast of France, one of the most dramatic naval battles in history took place. On a clear day with windswept skies, the dreaded Confederate raider Alabama faced the Union warship Kearsarge in an all-or-nothing fight to the finish, the outcome of which would effectively end the threat of the Confederacy on the high seas.

This book gives a good account of both the Kearsarge and Alabama as well as the prominent crew members of each ship. Definitely worth a listen if you have interest in the Civil War or naval warfare.

Historia
In six weeks during April and May 1915, as World War I escalated, Germany forever altered the way war would be fought. On April 22, at Ypres, German canisters spewed poison gas at French and Canadian soldiers in their trenches; on May 7, the German submarine U-20, without warning, torpedoed the passenger liner Lusitania, killing 1,198 civilians; and on May 31, a German Zeppelin began the first aerial bombardment of London and its inhabitants.

Very Informative
Revisado: 05-24-23
This is a very interesting and informative book about several important events in the First World War. The reader was great. A considerable amount of information was presented along with first hand accounts. The only critique I have is that the book jumps around among the three topics covered and sometimes gets out of chronological order.

Historia
Although previously undervalued for their strategic impact because they represented only a small percentage of total forces, the Union and Confederate navies were crucial to the outcome of the Civil War. In War on the Waters, James M. McPherson has crafted an enlightening, at times harrowing, and ultimately thrilling account of the war’s naval campaigns and their military leaders. McPherson recounts how the Union navy’s blockade of the Confederate coast, leaky as a sieve in the war’s early months, became increasingly effective as it choked off vital imports and exports.

Historia
In this concise account of why America used atomic bombs against Japan in 1945, J. Samuel Walker analyzes the reasons behind President Truman's most controversial decision. Delineating what was known and not known by American leaders at the time, Walker evaluates the options available for ending the war with Japan. In this new edition, Walker incorporates a decade of new research - mostly from Japanese archives only recently made available - that provides fresh insight on the strategic considerations that led to dropping the bomb.

An objective review of the issue
Revisado: 04-10-21
This book was very informative about the decisions and factors surrounding the use of the atomic bombs. It’s relatively short yet contains a lot of information. I would have liked it to have included more information on the effects of the bombs and the Manhattan Project’s history but that could be found elsewhere anyway and was not the objective of the book. Before listing to the book, I was a strong supporter of the decision to use the weapons, after it, I retain my position but would say that my conviction has been slightly diminished. The author did an excellent job of not only providing information on various perspectives, both at the time the decision was made and since then but doing so in an unbiased way.
