Historia
World War II tail gunner Gene Moran fell four miles through the sky without a parachute and lived. Captured by the Germans, he survived a harrowing eighteen months as a prisoner of war, including a six-hundred-mile death march in 1945 across Central Europe. When Gene returned home, he kept those memories locked up for nearly seventy years. His nine children knew little of their dad's war story. But when John, a young history teacher, learns of Gene's amazing fall, he's desperate to learn more. Finally, Gene agrees.

horrible narration, but not a well edited book either, don't waste your time.
Revisado: 03-14-24
Another narrator that sounds like AI. Intonation and pronunciation of place names and even some common words are just OFF. Characters are given voices that absolutely do not suit them or do not suit the narrative. it should have been read by a human being, preferably a Wisconsin native since the characters are nearly all from there and should talk like it and pronounce place names appropriately.
Getting beyond the garbage recording, the story of the soldier is mostly fine, but the the author is such a a narcissist that he couldn't keep to the plot but talks as much or more about himself than the interviewee, relating HIS story rather than sticking to that of the WWII vet whom he has the privilege of getting information from. And the editing leaves much to be desired. The author mentions all too often that he is an amateur but he doesn't need to prove it so thoroughly! Pointless redundancies and distasteful non-sequitors riddle the text. 'An actual biography of the WWII vet, including his 2-yr war story and then maybe, y'know, a bit more about his remaining 70 YEARS in which he raises 9 children with his wife - nah, not enough there to write about, gotta write an autobiography about my own insecurities that i really do nothing about, but hey, at least i find a pretty girl to replace my wife after she dies of brain cancer, and a friend of my wife no less! Yes, I really succeeded, that I did!'

having robots read aloud
Revisado: 01-31-24
I am convinced that the narrator is a robot. No human being would read English this way, and certainly would not read Jane Austin the way this narrator proceeds. The words and sentences are structured such, and the many mid sentence pauses where there seems to be an audible cut in the audio, present a pieced-together narration wholly devoid of humanity and humor, enough to make a sentient being shudder at the experience. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS, it is an utter waste of time and is NOT an experience of Jane Austin's literary style. AVOID THIS VERSION.

Historia
Written after the capture of Rome in 410 by Alaric, King of the Visigoths, St Augustine's City of God was intended as a response to pagan critics who blamed Christianity for this brutal defeat. Augustine attacks ancient pagan beliefs and relates the corruption and immorality that led to Rome's downfall, which began before Christ, before reaching his main argument: that the City of Man is perishing and only the Heavenly City of God will endure.

Historia
A wonderful story of adventure through the different spheres of life by Scottish author George MacDonald. Listeners will fall in love with this "Christ-like" character, Gibbie, who is a mute, yet truly good in heart and in deed. A uniquely creative tale that will capture both the old and the young for ages to come.

a great story and a happy ending
Revisado: 06-08-20
I compare this book to The Idiot by Theodore Dostoyevski, but MacDonald presents us with the upbringing of the hero and, instead of Dostoyevsky's fool we have a creature with a more tragic past and a more acute mind. MacDonald paints many beautiful pictures of an idyllic if impoverished country life amidst caricatures of class and Christian hypocrisy. in this book, the Christian idealist triumphs, though aided by money ex machina. I was pleasantly surprised by the happy ending.
I listen at a much faster speed so cannot comment on the narrator honestly except that his accent in wonderful but tempo too slow.

slow reader but excellent book esp. near the end
Revisado: 10-23-19
Really enjoyed listening to this story of redemption and last things, was not at all what I was expecting and now I am unlikely to ever forget a number of the scenes. The book is allegory and philosophy and theology much heavier than I anticipated, with a tiny amount of adventure to carry the plot forward. I will be listening to more of MacDonald's books.

a simple story but a joy to listen to
Revisado: 08-23-19
This brief tale of crusader knights uses wonderful rich language. My only complaint is with the performance, the reader evidently lacked vocabulary as he mispronounced a number of words, most egregious was "kyrie eleison" (lord have mercy), but it was not enough to sully the fun and his skilled use of different voices for the characters. I highly recommend this recording.

well read, but sad and absurd early sci-fi
Revisado: 08-08-19
Brian Kelly reads well although slow (listen at >1.5x). The "novel" itself starts out well enough as an early sci-fi fantasy by Mark Twain, but his ridiculous and acerbic political prejudices quickly get in the way and the story is more of a diatopian work with little to laugh at despite Twain's continual efforts at humor. The story rambles a lot in the middle, seems to lose the plot, and then ties up very rapidly (and violently) at the end. Other than as an early example of American sci-fi and to see where many later stories take a lot of ideas (or use ideas that Twain thought of earlier), there is really no reason to bother with this book. A waste of time, and definitely not for young or impressionable readers.

GREAT story..., but not read by a Scotsman
Revisado: 06-28-19
Great story, loved the writing, will look for more by this author, very engaging and entertaining. The characters are well developed among the protagonists, well portrayed among those he isn't familiar with which makes sense a it is written in the first person.
I previously complained about the narrator's accent, but had the misconception that it should sound more Scottish, which is wrong. the narrator's accent is right on, excellent and well appreciated, will recommend this recording everywhere to everyone, well done!

intense story, well read.
Revisado: 05-31-19
the narrator does a good job giving different voices to the characters, reads well. the story is intense and draws you in, quite enjoyable for those old enough to understand and to handle the many dark scenes and themes. Not a story for young children, but perhaps enthralling for 10+ kids. A fun ride, and a very good ending (spoiler).
