Historia
Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history. She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen wouldn’t mind a lasting one. When she meets Patrick, she’s optimistic. He’s attractive, single, employed, and best of all, he seems to like her back. Then comes that dreaded moment: He thinks they should have a talk. Braced for the worst, Ellen is pleasantly surprised.

This is my favorite Liane Moriarty book
Revisado: 02-18-24
I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. I reserve 5 stars for stellar books that are entertaining, beautifully written, and full of wisdom that impacts my perceptions in a profound way. But this was a really lovely novel, skillfully written and touching. I was sorry that it ended.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Just painfully awful
Revisado: 10-25-23
Full of nasty, jealous and spiteful characters. Sloppy mispronunciations, misinformation, and caricatures. Mean spirited and petty-minded. This book must have been written by a 12 year old.

Simple story translated from Japanese
Revisado: 10-02-23
I liked the setting and the peek into a culture that I was unfamiliar with. But the descriptions of emotions and the dialogue was pretty simplistic, like a children's story. The language was at times repetitive which I don't think can be blamed entirely on the fact that it was translated from the Japanese. I almost didn't finish it.

Inspiring but dark, better to read than listen
Revisado: 10-22-21
This book has a lot of insightful advice both from her and from other writers. I ended up bookmarking and sharing some of my favorites. I also found the sections about the process of writing and the discipline needed very helpful and inspiring. But it was also a depressing story in places and hard to get through. She goes into her terrible childhood with her selfish, narcissistic mother and depressed father enough to call this a memoir as much as a book about writing. At times, the tone was deeply cynical. It may be the narrator's take on the author's words - it's hard to say whether the author's own voice would sound so depleted, even snarky. I'd recommend reading it rather than listening.

Historia
Meg Mackworth's hand-lettering skill has made her famous as the Planner of Park Slope, designing custom journals for her New York City clientele. She has another skill too: reading signs that other people miss. Knowing the upcoming marriage of Reid Sutherland and his fiancee was doomed to fail is one thing, but weaving a secret word of warning into their wedding program is another. Meg may have thought no one would spot it, but she hadn't counted on sharp-eyed, pattern-obsessed Reid. A year later, Reid tracks Meg down to find out how she knew that his future was about to implode.

If you like romance novels...
Revisado: 02-22-21
As Lincoln said “For those who like that kind of a book, it is just about the kind of a book they would like.” I’m not a fan of romance novels and found it hard to get through but there are bright spots. You have to get past the predictable plot, hackneyed and repetitive words and phrases (including “his furrowed brow” not to mention “his hard length.”) What I did like was the main character’s evolution of understanding and learning to resolve conflict by not running from it. I feel as if this could have been a good book if the author had cared to take the time to make it one. She doesn’t need to though - people will read it as is.

Series losing its charm
Revisado: 05-22-19
McCall Smith and this series was delightful to start (for the most part) but his characters are getting tedious. This series is starting to feel like an afternoon with your cranky grandpa who drones on about how things just aren’t what they used to be. And those liberals!! Lots of bitterness here.

Historia
When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: Dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time.

Couldn’t get through it because the tone is so snarky
Revisado: 01-26-19
The author is talented, but the narrator sounds so full of disdain that I couldn’t finish it even though I suspect that reading it might be entertaining.
