Quintessential GGK, but the narrator is a bit weak.
Revisado: 08-22-24
Not his best, but still great GGK. That means a poetic and masterful telling of the joy and sorrow of people striving for good and honor, often in opposing groups, in a historical representation of our difficult world.
The narrator is decent, but he can't imbue the prose with the gravitas and emotion that others (like Simon Vance or Tim Gerard Reynolds) do so well.

Historia
Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows - to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before. A killer who is just like him. Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry.

Vacuous storytelling and bone dry action. I'm happy for the author's success, but this is bad.

Historia
The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

A beautifully written tale of hope and lament.
Revisado: 01-30-23
I absolutely loved it. A beautifully told story with heart. While Kay occasionally leans into the erotic in Lions, he vividly paints demonstrations of true passion, love, and honor.

Historia
It is one of the most well-known and well-loved fantasy epics of the twentieth century: the story of Elric, emperor of the dying kingdom of Melniboné. For a hundred centuries the Melnibonéans have ruled from the Dragon Isle of Imrryr. Now, after years of corruption and decadence, Elric’s amoral cousin Prince Yyrkoon, the brother of his beloved Cymoril, sets his eyes on the Ruby Throne. Elric must face his treacherous cousin not as a warrior but as a sorcerer king once again in league with the ancient gods of Melniboné, the Chaos Lords, and thus sealing his inexorable fate.

A strange brew of philosophy and pulp
Revisado: 01-27-23
Certainly more than the sum of its parts, Elric, the last emperor of Melnibone, provides some of the real estate upon which modern fantasy stands. That being said, these books seem to be, more than anything else, a sandbox for Moorcock to ponder philosophy, metaphysics, and ethics. The plots are often thin and random as so much of Elric's fate is in the hands of capricious gods. So despite his profound strength of will and pioneering independence of thought, he's continually propelled by forces greater still to enact or suffer calamity after calamity. In this way, the reader shares Elric's dilemma: Just what is the purpose to all of this? Where is it going? I can appreciate this meta narrative, but I don't find it substantive or compelling.

Historia
Agnes Manteo now bears her father’s sentient Djao sword, along with a terrible revelation - the gods are charlatans, ancient sorcerers who draw their strength from the suffering of humanity. She and her Syraeic companions have but one duty: to track down those pretenders and end their reign of cruelty and lies, no matter the cost. To that end, the magical blade - mighty, single-minded Szaa’da’shaela - won’t allow any wavering of their commitment. But the empire is in turmoil with the sudden passing of its undying queen.

Disappointing conclusion from a promising author
Revisado: 12-07-22
When I began this series I was enraptured by the aged, broken protagonist and his struggle through a world filled with latent dread.
Largely, though, Iconoclasts fails to deliver on its promises. Shel shares only glimpses of the horror his characters feel. The plot has a solid trajectory, but its pacing is off particularly in the final book. Each point in the arc fits well, but the writing never manages to illicit the suspense and concern necessary for satisfying resolutions.
I will continue to follow Shel's development, but I hope he adds some things to his toolbox.

Solid, but doesn't really stand out.
Revisado: 11-14-22
This was a good, if not great listen. Unlike many books the the genre, Tier One did not suffer from instructing the reader or the overuse of jargon and unnecessary details in an attempt to establish bona fides...with one exception. If, while reading "crouch" in the description of an operation, a person says, "OK, but was it a 'tactical crouch'?", the issue is with that person. It is not inexactness on the part of the author. Otherwise, this was fast-paced, compelling story with satisfying, though predictable, conclusion.

An enjoyable dip into a lost age
Revisado: 10-23-22
I really enjoy Angus Watson. His characters feel relatable, yet largely true to their time. I especially appreciate Watson's efforts at historical accuracy. Because of this, however, I was a little annoyed by sensibilities that were just a bit too modern. If that doesn't scare you off, then definitely check out this author.

A pleasure
Revisado: 07-03-22
I purchased this during one of Audible's sales which generally contain plenty of second rate niche garbage. Seemingly not written for such an audience, this novel seeks to stand on its own. The social commentary is also rather subdued leaving You Die When You Die to be a pleasure to listen to. While the plot is not enormously compelling, the characters and world won me over. Levity and death manage to walk hand in hand and the historical nature of the cultures and environs is felt throughout.

Historia
An ongoing, episodic "prose comic" from which the pictures are summoned by the magic of words, Goon Squad is set in an alternate version of modern-day Manchester. Its biggest divergence from the real city is that it - along with most other large urban centers - has a team of superheroes to protect it against unusual threats with which the conventional forces of law and order would have problems. Goon Squad: Year One offers three action-packed volumes in a single collection.

Good, but hurt by some poor production choices
Revisado: 11-27-21
The narration was all great, but the chapter break music was an unpleasant interruption every time.
The writing was often more rich than I expected for what otherwise felt like YA pulp.
