Interesting Female Characters Bloody Conclusion
Revisado: 09-11-22
Final volume winds up the conflicts among human and fey races. Some satisfying relationships and a lot of loss. Back stories of evil characters portray compassion.

Faithful to Japanese culture and zen philosophy, it's LONG and melodramatic. Akin to a western "soap opera." Narrator is excellent.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost. The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Historia
From the perspective of those who live in Herot Hall, the suburb is a paradise. Picket fences divide buildings—high and gabled—and the community is entirely self-sustaining. Each house has its own fireplace, each fireplace is fitted with a container of lighter fluid, and outside—in lawns and on playgrounds—wildflowers seed themselves in neat rows. But for those who live surreptitiously along Herot Hall’s periphery, the subdivision is a fortress guarded by an intense network of gates, surveillance cameras, and motion-activated lights.

Historia
Highly acclaimed author Ursula K. Le Guin lends a resonant voice to a pivotal yet often overlooked character of Vergil's The Aeneid. Born into peace and freedom, Lavinia is stunned to learn that she will be the cause of a great war - or so the prophecies and omens claim. Her fate is sealed, however, when she meets a man from Troy.

Roman Origin Myth with a Touch of Fantasy

Ursula LeGuin, a master of sci-fi and fantasy, takes an obscure character from Virgil and weaves a touching historical novel. Satisfying in a sweet and feminist way without much actual historical record.

All is not well in the Eight Kingdoms. In Lyonya, King Kieri is about to celebrate marriage to his beloved, the half-elf Arian. But uncanny whispers from the spirits of his ancestors continue to warn of treachery and murder. A finger of suspicion has been pointed toward his grandmother, the queen of the Ladysforest elves, and that suspicion has only intensified with time and the Lady’s inexplicable behavior.

Evolving Leaders in Magical World
Revisado: 10-30-12
If you could sum up Echoes of Betrayal in three words, what would they be?
As a fan of Elizabeth Moon years ago, both of us are older these days. Ms Moon at least also seems wiser about how "ordinary" folk rise to fill a variety of magical and practical challenges. In following this saga, I have reflected on the value of paying attention to others' strengths and weaknesses with humility and compassion, understanding what their motivations are, and accepting everyone's limitations.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I particularly enjoyed the Thieves Guild master who has to accept his demi-god patron Gerd choosing him for higher purposes. When he finally realizes what is going on, he becomes vulnerable in a touching, very human way.
Any additional comments?
Can't wait for the next segment due out(in print) in June, 2013!

Feudal Japanese Fantasy w Modern Themes
Revisado: 08-20-12
What made the experience of listening to Across the Nightingale Floor the most enjoyable?
Wealth of seasonal, weather, wildlife, and nature details; alternating male and female narrators.
What did you like best about this story?
The complex plot and interweaving of motives with cultural features was engaging. I have studied Japanese history and read original novels and memoirs. While this story is not historical fact, it evokes the feudal era albeit with modern themes -women's roles and power, violence vs non-violence, social justice and the well being of the lower classes. I am interested in these issues, so have enjoyed haring a somewhat fanciful treatment.
Which scene was your favorite?
Shirakawa Kaede's self-defense when assaulted by the warlord.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I enjoy splitting up my listening.
Any additional comments?
I was looking for a long book - this is part of a 4 volume series, and I have stayed engaged throughout.
