Historia
No matter how Declan Idrys looks at his situation, he comes to the same conclusion every time: He is about to die at the hands of the first dark elf seen in 700 years. Fate, fortunately, is not so cruel, though, and after barely surviving this initial encounter with the er’endehn of Eserysh, Declan and his friends find themselves in a tentative truce with the war-loving elves. They share a common enemy, after all, and their mutual hate for the Endless Queen and her growing legions is enough for the two groups to set aside their mistrust for one another, if only for now.

Great continuation of an amazing story!
Revisado: 07-29-21
Bryce O'Connor and Luke Chmilenko continue to deliver exciting fantasy with characters I enjoy. I (nearly) always love the first book in any fantasy or sci-fi series more than the rest because discovering a new world is fascinating to me, but in A Blood of Kings O'Connor and Chmilenko have expanded their world, deepened the various relationships between many of the characters, and introduced new elements that combined to form a sequel that I enjoyed ALMOST as much as the first.

Historia
In his first-ever Doctor Who novel, Tom Baker’s incredible imagination is given free rein. A story so epic it was originally intended for the big screen, Scratchman is a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost 40 years in the making. The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures - hideous scarecrows who are preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all.

The Doctor writing and performing a Doctor Who story?? Yes please!! Tom Baker is just as much the Doctor today as he was back in the 70s, yet this new adventure has all the excitement and pizzazz of the modern series. Highly recommended to any Whovian!

Historia
Best-selling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about and advocates for survivors of sexual assault. Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published 20 years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless.

Vulnerability and power are synonyms
Revisado: 03-17-19
Speak was put into my hands by a collage professor 17 years ago. It led me first to pick up a pen, then to begin to feel, then to slowly start speaking all that was within me to say. Today, I can laugh and sing with a joy and freedom I'd never known before! When I heard that the author was publishing a memoir I immediately preordered the audible edition, narrated by Laurie herself. I was so gripped that I stayed up far too late, unwilling to silence her even for a few hours. And of course, the next thing I did was pick up my pen again. Inspiring, visceral, eloquent, vulnerable, and above all, powerful.

Historia
Nearly everyone swears - whether it's over a few too many drinks, in reaction to a stubbed toe, or in flagrante delicto. And yet we sit idly by as words are banned from television and censored in books. We insist that people excise profanity from their vocabularies, and we punish children for yelling the very same dirty words that we'll mutter in relief seconds after they fall asleep. Swearing, it seems, is an intimate part of us that we have decided to selectively deny.

Fan-f***ing-tastic!
Revisado: 03-09-18
As a linguist by trade and a closet cusser, this book was fascinating to me. Bergen relays the history, grammar, stigmas, physiology, and varieties of profanity across the world. It is accessible and entertaining enough for the less scientific and still portrays enough facts and data for those with a scientific bent. He is professional and straightforward, but allows for the occasional tongue in cheek joke to entertain the reader as well. I learned so much and can't stop talking about it!!

I learned so much AND was enthralled!
Revisado: 09-17-17
The author does a wonderful job of offering factual information in the context of stories. You don't just learn about how military dogs came to be; you get to know the earliest soldier dogs. Same for the current training methods and qualifications. You meet real dogs and their handlers. The author also compares her dopey lab to the working dogs, as of course I was doing with my little choodle!

Great story! I finished it in one sitting as I was so compelled and drawn in. Having multiple narrators was absolutely key in effectively relating this tale. I wasn't especially thrilled with the voice of the younger brother, Cody, but it wasn't distracting from the overall experience.
