Using the same inspired, inquisitive approach, he now turns to our most sacred book: the Bible. What Is the Bible? provides insights and answers that make clear why the Bible is so revered and what makes it truly inspiring and essential to our lives. Best book about the Bible ever
Revisado: 01-16-24
This is not a book that just tells you what to think. Rather, the author is inviting you TO think and giving you some ideas about how you might think and giving you some context to help you out and by the end, you may see the Bible in a whole new way and may even be inspired to read it again, this time with new eyes.

The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Historia
Dish up the red meat, eggs, and whole milk! In this well-researched and captivating narrative, veteran food writer Nina Teicholz proves how everything we've been told about fat is wrong. For decades, Americans have cut back on red meat and dairy products full of "bad" saturated fats. We obediently complied with nutritional guidelines to eat "heart healthy" fats found in olive oil, fish, and nuts, and followed a Mediterranean diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, and grains. Yet the nation's health has declined. What is going on?

Right and yet still missing the mark
Revisado: 11-16-19
She does a great job reviewing numerous studies, but leaves out a few things. First, the studies comparing low-fat to high-fat would be better categorized as lower-fat vs. higher-fat, but they were both still high in fat. The "low-fat" groups were still somewhere around 30% which is high. Second, if you are going to look at the major studies, why wasn't the China Study included? That study, which was huge, showed the higher the consumption of animal products the high the rates of disease. Third, while she is right about not needing to fear saturated fat, you don't need to get it from animal products, which bring along with it a lot of unhealthy things to the body. Finally, eating vegetarian is closer to eating a carnivore diet because you are still eating things like eggs and dairy. Okay, one more thing...if you are going to talk about health, why would you not include the blue zones where there is a high concentration of people living to and over 100 who are not being kept alive by tons of medications or suffering from serious diseases? Just some things to think about if you are like me and just want to eat in a way that helps me live the longest, disease-free life possible.

Not totally accurate, but some good information
Revisado: 11-16-19
He does a great job of making insulin resistance and the benefits of fasting very understandable. From everything I have read about fasting, he is spot on there. However, I discovered from his podcast that he is a proponent of eating Keto, which is great for losing weight and reducing the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes, but not good for overall health; you can see some of the science about that plantproof.com, which really helped clear up some confusion for me in regards to all the debates about high-fat vs. low-fat and high-protein / low-carb vs. high-carb / moderate-protein.

Based on seven years of ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we're all in this together.

I should read this book every year
Revisado: 08-06-18
Brené Brown has done some great research and her writing style is so accessible. This book contains SUCH good information on shame I feel like I should read it every year. Before reading this book, I didn't think I had a problem with shame, but it turns out that there are some areas in my life where I do. I feel like it also educated me in a way that I can be more sensitive towards others by not accidentally shaming them. This book has value for everyone!

Took a chance and was absolutely delighted!!!
Revisado: 04-15-16
This was a book audible recommended and I'm so glad I took a chance on it. What an amazing story; I am now hooked on Bryce Courtenay. And the narration was exceptional; Humphrey Bower did such a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life and helping you to feel the emotion of the story. Bower has earned a spot as one of my two favorite narrators. This book is definitely worth a listen even if it's not the type of book you would normally read; take a chance and let yourself be delighted.

Historia
Observing an encounter between Catholic and Buddhist monks in 1996 at the Abbey of Gethsemani, near where he grew up in rural Kentucky, Fenton Johnson found himself unable to make the sign of the cross. His distance from his childhood faith had become so great - he considered himself a rational, skeptical man - that he could not participate in this most basic ritual. Impelled by this troubling experience, Johnson began a search for the meaning of the spiritual life.

Interesting but narration made it a tough listen
Revisado: 03-23-15
A friend recommended this book and I was very interested in reading it, but the narration make it very difficult to stay interested and keep listening. Her reading style was very slow and mechanical, especially in the beginning. I loved the sound of her voice, but I felt like I was listening to a robot. Despite this, I did listen to the entire book because I have an interest in monasticism and I like hearing about other people's spiritual journeys. I am not sure I would recommend this book, at least not in audio form.

Historia
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

What made the experience of listening to Divergent the most enjoyable?
Great story combined with great narration = could not stop listening!
Any additional comments?
This book was so good I had a hard time putting it down; I was losing sleep because I would take it to bed and listen until I just couldn't keep my eyes open.

If you could sum up Ready Player One in three words, what would they be?
Until Ready Player One, Ender's Game was my all-time favorite sci-fi fantasy book. Ender's Game has now been bumped in the rankings to number two. Great story and loved all the references to 80s music, movies, video games, and TV shows.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Almost as good as the Mistborn series
Revisado: 10-04-10
It's almost a 5, but I liked the Mistborn series a little better because I got hooked in right from the start. This one took some time, but once he got going, it was a fantastic read and was very hard to put down. Sanderson has an absolutely amazing imagination and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
