SO GOOD!!
Revisado: 04-26-25
I’m glad I’ve learned to overlook reviews and take my chances on books that have not been rated too high. This one was no exception. It held my attention from beginning to end. I found myself looking forward to being able to continue listening to it. The character development and depth was phenomenal. The plot was unique and cleverly devised. Gillian McAllister has become one of my new favorite authors!

Over the course of a week, Mira befriends Sona, seeing in her something bigger than the small life she's living with her mother.

Another gem by Alka Joshi
Revisado: 04-21-25
I have loved all of Alka Joshi’s previous books and have listened to each of them multiple times. This one didn’t disappoint either. The depth of the characters and the beauty with which she intricately weaves their stories never ceases to amaze me. The combination of Alka Joshi’s writing and Sneha Mathan’s narration cannot be beat.

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

Beautifully Written
Revisado: 03-18-25
A heartbreaking story that has been artfully told in a way that makes you laugh at times and cry at others. The innocence and naivety of childhood has been so beautifully and intricately portrayed, that it keeps you wishing their story would never end. I wish the author had more novels on Audiobook. Sneha Mathan did an incredible job with the narration, as always.

Boring story and laughable narration
Revisado: 01-26-25
I really tried to get through this book, not only because of the high ratings and raves it received, but also because I had enjoyed this author's book, The Far Pavilions. However, this one was SO boring that I found myself having to rewind it repeatedly because my mind would drift off. I still would have finished the book though if it wasn't for the awful narration. You would think that if a narrator is going to be recording a book about a foreign culture that includes foreign words, that the narrator would prepare themselves adequately and make sure they're pronouncing the words even somewhat appropriately. This narrator's pronunciation of even simple Hindi words was so laughable that I felt like I was listening to an SNL skit. Even something as simple as "Gulab Mahal" was said as "Gulaarbb Maharrrl" and "Begum", which is a common Hindi/Urdu term, was pronounced Begooom. I couldn't take the narrator or the book seriously after that. I'm grateful that Audible allowed me to return this and not waste a credit.

Waste of time
Revisado: 09-12-24
I really don’t get all the raving reviews this book and this series has received. I tried to keep pushing through because I was hoping it would eventually start living up to its unfounded praises, but I’m done. I am so bored with the elementary writing and basic plots with random occurrences to make the “twists” more convenient, that I could care less what happens in the subsequent books. I can imagine maybe liking this series as a 12 year old, but now that I am unfortunately much older than that, I can’t justify wasting any more time on it. The only positive aspect was the narrator, who has been amazing throughout the series, and I hate that her talent has been wasted on such a mind-numbing series.

So painfully BORING
Revisado: 08-16-24
I really wanted to like this book. I hate finishing a good book and having to search for a new one, so I was really hoping this book would be the start of a LONG series I could look forward to. I forced myself to keep listening, hoping that I’d soon catch a glimpse of why Sue Grafton is so popular. It was so excruciatingly, mind-numbingly boring, that I quit listening with only 2 hours left. I realized that I was so uninterested, that I honestly didn’t care to know the ending. None of the characters were relatable or likable. The narrator was equally mind-numbing and made me feel like I was watching a news broadcast. What turns me off most though about a book is if the writing and dialogue are flat and basic, which would be an overstatement for this book.

Good plot
Revisado: 05-16-24
Definitely held my attention until the end. Really good plot that’s made even more interesting by the fact that it could actually happen in the current political climate, unfortunately. But there were a lot of plot holes and big coincidences that took away from it. Also, I was able to figure out the twist at the beginning because that character was presented as being a little off from the get go.

One of the best I’ve heard in a while
Revisado: 12-04-23
After going through months of long, dragging books that never maintained my attention and that left me feeling like I had already listened to all the good books out there, I was SO excited to come across this!! It was just long enough without unnecessary, filler details or scenes. The plot was unique and captivating. I’m so glad I tried it out, and I’m hoping the author’s other books are just as good!

Revisado: 10-05-23
I have listened to and read this book multiple times. This is the book that made me fall in love with all things Liane Moriarty. It never grows old and never gets boring. I still cry and laugh each time I go through this book. So beautifully written. The only thing that could make the audio book better is if Caroline Lee had narrated this one too.
