Historia
Britain. The near-future. A right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills—the Sanctity of Marriage Act, which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single. But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives—monitoring every word, every minor disagreement…and will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honor and obey.

Had potential but fell flat. Too many storylines jumbled together and hastily pulled together. Not the worst audiobook I’ve listened to, but not worth a credit.

Super slow but it pays off
Revisado: 01-15-25
The dialogue made me cringe and the story took FOREVER to get moving, but that said, the ending paid off enough for me to give this 5 stars, which is saying a lot because I almost didn’t make it through. The last hour completely saves this entire audiobook.

Took a little while to get interesting and probably could have been shorter, but overall ended up being pretty good and I will definitely want to listen to the next installment.

What a waste of time
Revisado: 10-08-24
Kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did. Cherry narrator was grating and her story was not overly compelling. Can’t believe it took the entire length of the story to realize there was no real story. One of the worst books I’ve ever listened to.

Historia
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Good but not as good as the others
Revisado: 11-08-23
John Lee is a phenomenal narrator and the writing is good, but there is little to no connection to any of the other books in the series. This is understandable considering that it’s ~800 years after The Evening and the Morning.
The other books all grew in scope, starting with Kingsbridge (née Dreng’s Ferry) and gradually expanding to a nearly global scale in Column of Fire. This book, however, contracted significantly which gave the whole book a feel of “falling action” while completely neglecting to mention other significant developments pertaining to the British Empire in the same era.
Overall, great listen, but I hope it’s the last entry to the Kingsbridge series because anything more would likely be further step backward.

Historia
“Sharks are as timid as rabbits,” says a superintendent of the Coast Guard, dismissing the possibility that a shark could be the culprit in an unprecedented fatal attack at the Jersey Shore. It’s July, and swimming in the sea is a popular new pastime, but people up and down the East Coast are shocked and mystified by the swimmer’s death. A prominent surgeon at the shore, Dr. Edwin Halsey is the one who examines the victim, and the only one who believes the perpetrator was a shark—and that it will strike again.

Jaw-ful
Revisado: 05-26-23
Another listener commented that the story sounds like it was written by AI, and I couldn’t offer a better assessment if I tried.
Also, the book tries in a not-so-subtle way to draw parallels to the the way that the general public and some factions of the government deny science and deny facts. I get it, but it came off preachy. I just wanted to listen to a story about sharks.

Coben’s most implausible story yet
Revisado: 04-27-23
This story was horrendous and contrived at every level. I can’t decide whether it was one long deus ex machina or just a continuous stream of them. Not one single aspect of this book is even remotely plausible, which is profoundly disappointing considering Harlan’s previous body of work. I hope that this is not a sign of things to come. Hard pass.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Great story, not in love with the ending
Revisado: 02-28-23
No spoilers, but the fate of one character was left fairly ambiguous, hence the reason for 4 starts instead of 5.
The characters were very well developed considering how relatively short the novel is.
Octopuses (that is apparently the acceptable plural form) are truly incredible and Marcellus is an instant classic!

Nicole’s suspicions mount as every answer leads to more questions. What really happened to Alys? And what became of her son, who disappeared the day she was hanged? Ending was obvious 1/4 of the way through
Revisado: 12-14-22
No spoiler necessary: I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed and as such, am generally slow to catch on when it comes to twist endings.
In this case; however, I knew what was going to happen before the book was even halfway over, which rendered the remaining three quarters of the listen tedious.
I wanted to like this book and have a new series to listen to, but I will be saving my credits.
