which he did....a lot. and the story itself.... the "names" of the chapters are just a low-rent cliff notes of what's going to happen... killing whatever illusion of suspense there could be.

chapter 11 was the only worthwhile part of the 13+ hours.

Weber's voice wasn't as perfect a fit for these characters imho, and at times, that was distracting.

“Unforgivable II” picks up just a short time after the first novel ends. Sofia is tortured and wrecked about what happened to her father. Like anybody who faces the injustices of life and karma, she seeks to balance the scales herself.

Sofia is nothing like her late father. Which is the only way a series like this can exist without getting stale. While Jamus was an average man, who bit off more than he could chew, Sofia never had the chance to really have anything resembling a normal existence. She is a killer through and through, and it’s glorious.

There are some other elements to Sofia, that I do not wish to spoil, but suffice it to say that she’s cunning and manipulative; thus, absolutely nothing will get in her way when she wants something. A gal after this reader’s heart (^.-).

Like the first book, the villain is really unredeemable, and our main character meets up with a collection of memorable faces...some of them you’d think would last longer than they do.

What I like most about Mr. Fuller’s writing style, is that he always seems to include a “door #2,” as in: he includes the happy ending that could be, if the character just reached for it. Whether Sofia reached it or not, is up to the reader.

This part of the review is for the audiobook alone: I’m convinced that Bradley Snedeker could read items off the menu at my local ramen shop, and I’d still be riveted. And he can do accents ladies and gentlemen. Talk about a thirst trap, ay?

“Broken Shards of a Masterpiece” is a small collection of stand-alone stories. That being said, it is recommended to read/listen to the stories as they are presented. My two favorites were “Judas Kiss” and “Room for Rent” as both were pretty easy to get lost in, and I wished there was more to both of them.

There was one story in particular that started out a bit rough, but I’m very glad that I stuck with it. As it was a very misleading story, and there was a twist that I did not foresee, the ending was a satisfying reward.

Something else that deserves a mention, is that the last short story was not written by Mr. Fuller, but his wife. Despite being authored by another, the story fits in, and rounds out, the entire collection. In fact, it would not be surprising to find that it’s a reader’s favorite.

Despite the brevity of these stories, Mr Fuller manages to create realistic, if gritty, settings. The characters are powerful, and they do bring out an emotion, or two, from the reader....even if it’s not necessarily a positive emotion (^.-) .

Now this part of the review is about the audio alone: Mr. Adam Shults was really hit or miss for me. There were parts where his voice really made the story come alive for me...and in other parts...not so much. It seemed like he was trying a bit too hard to add gravitas to stories that were more scenery-based. The stories that focused more on dialog were much better.

Unforgivable (Book I) initially comes off as a very over-done revenge story. Of course tragic things have to happen to propel this story along. Tried and true clichés. But what the author manages to do, is put in some very different, and unique, touches that make this story very interesting.

We start off with Jamus and his family enjoying a regular evening at home after having been at a festival not far from where they live. The door kicks in, and everything goes straight to hell. If the reader is a parent, they’re going to have a hard time with the events that transpire. The author does toe the line, and doesn’t take the scene any further than it needs to. That being said, it’s gloriously rough. It’s this unimaginable set of circumstances that transforms this farmer into the personification of wrath.

From here, the novel becomes a macabre to-do list. And this reader is TOTALLY there for it (^.-). It’s realistic that Jamus is initially at a loss as to what to do. He wants everyone dead of course, but he needs to get to that final boss battle, and he is without the knowledge to do so. The reader sees his rage overcome his logic; thus, several times he impedes his own agenda. It’s what any person with little experience with rage/violence would do.

From there, we see multiple perspectives from the different characters. Some of whom the reader would think would last longer than they do. Overall, each of them is memorable in their own way. The villain of this story is utterly perfect. He’s completely unredeemable and following his thoughts/actions is a joy. Half the time the reader wants to kill him themselves, and so they cannot help but be fully complicit in Jamus’s murder spree.

Bradley Snedeker was the PERFECT voice for this novel. There are times when I wonder if I liked the book, or his voice more (^.-). Guess I’ll have to purchase the second audio book in the series to REALLY be sure.

Precious Amber is an exceptionally visceral story that toes the line in several areas without taking the actual leap.

It starts with our main gal Amber waiting for her father to come home. It’s a scene that plays out everyday in reality, which makes it all the more jarring to the reader to learn that Amber is being watched. In fact, she has always been watched.

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. And this novel really drives home that terror. Amber’s parents are not neglectful in any way. They are every adult who struggles to balance home and the drudgeries of work. They are well liked, and well known in their community. They have instilled in their daughter to not go off with strangers. They have done everything right.

The first part of the novel throws all of that out the window, and it is no stranger who Amber walks off with. A gut punch to any reader who is also a parent.

The reader is also able to follow the investigation’s ups and downs through the eyes of the police. A very flawed Captain who has his own demons that propel him through the case. He runs down every lead, willing to sacrifice everything to bring Amber home. All because he will not lose another little girl.

The view of the kidnapper is very hard to write without falling into some very cliched pitfalls. Precious Amber is one of the few novels that manages to avoid these pitfalls. The reader follows his trains of thought, how he is utterly convinced that he is taking care of his little girls. Sure it’s all mind games, and he even knows it, but there are times when even HE is convinced. To be able to lead the reader through that kind of journey takes an expert writer. In this, the reader would find very few flaws, if any.

Maria Huard was the PERFECT voice for this story. Because ultimately this story isn’t about a kidnapper, or any of the adults. It’s about a little girl who got thrown into a very dark situation, and grew into a being of strength and determination.
