Good overall, but very crunchy - lots of dates and details. Still a good listen and read well, just a little overwhelmed with all the dates sometimes. Kind of feel like the audio might have flowed better if all the individual dates were dropped and included in a PDF appendix or something. Still a great listen.

On the whole this book had good production value and I always like it when it's ready by the author (though not a deal breaker when it's not), but this book went a lot farther into the nuts and bolts of nutrient interaction that I was expecting. I mean, you go into something like this assuming you're going to get several study citations and research overviews, but the author was really breaking things down into the microverse which, if that's what you're looking for, then you won't be disappointed, but I wasn't looking to get that deep into the myriad of biochemical interactions that are taking place when certain micronutrients are ingested.

However, after listening to almost all of this audiobook (had just over 2 hours left) I kind of gave up. I'm not down for eating all kinds of weird organs like spleen and brain and all that jazz, though I wouldn't slight anyone for doing so, after all the hype around the Liver King and other similar influencers, a lot of that quickly starts to feel like so much carnivore flexing (if that's a thing) where the influencers are trying to out do one another with what unconventional thing they can eat. One of them eats raw kidneys, then the next eats raw spleens, then the next is eating raw testicles, or cracking open a skull and eating the raw brains right out of the brain case... ick!

At the end of the day though, I can overlook the game of anatomical chicken all the carnivore influencers are playing trying to out gross the other because that's what get's clicks or views, but what I did have trouble swallowing (pun intended) was that after buying and listening to the majority of this audiobook, I then found out that Paul Saladino doesn't even eat this way anymore. He's now incorporating fruit and honey in to his diet, which is fine if he's discovered some new information, but if that was the case then it seems like he'd pull this title and release a revised version detailing his new understanding in the context of his original text. This book dives pretty deep on why honey and fruit really shouldn't play a major, or even supporting, role in your diet and now he's reversed that and I'd like to know why and how his understanding of the science has evolved.

Without it, it just makes me feel like he's leaving incomplete information on the market because it's still making him money, and when making money trumps giving solid advice, then I have to question his motives. Heck, even if this title just came with a simple couple page disclaimer explaining that his understanding has changed, or an additional chapter with an update, then that would be something. But, finding out that he'd changed his stance after getting this audiobook left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

Long-winded, preachy, and heavy-handed

While there may be a great book about what you should and shouldn't eat hidden somewhere in this tome of anti-big ag and industrial food system faults rhetoric, I couldn't seem to find it. As the title of this review stated, the book seems long-winded and preachy, seemingly spending more time on the problem of industrial agriculture rather than on the title subject matter.

Now, don't get me wrong, I too think there are a lot of ways we could improve agriculture and I'm a big fan of locally and sustainably produced food, but that's not why I bought this audiobook. I bought it to get some clear, definitive, and unbiased information about food and what we should and shouldn't be eating. I was interested in his approach stating that the polarization of nutrition information out there (Keto vs. Vegan, etc...) was making it hard for people to know what really was good food and what wasn't.

Dr. Hyman certainly seems to have done his homework, but I feel like this book should have been broken into two different titles. The first being a book true to its title and the second being a book about the problems with our industrial food systems and some ways that individuals can help change them.

Maybe there was a minimum word count Dr. Hyman had to reach in order to get published or something, but I was looking for something simple and straightforward and I didn't feel like that was the point of this book. Much of the information gets repeated ad nauseum and he never misses the opportunity to take a jab at big ag or the food industry (again, not that I'm for them, but that's not why I bought this book).

This was a great performance that was made all the better by David Suchet's performance. If you were a fan of the TV series with David Suchet then you'll especially love his reprisal of the role. highly recommended!

More depressing than you'd think...

Perhaps I am just very stupid and could not understand what the author was getting at, but I was under the impression that this was an audiobook about how certain religious orders as a whole handled death. To be fair, I stopped listening after about an hour in, but it seemed more like a depressing retelling of the suffering of certain monks as they passed into the next life, rather than an overview of a certain ideology.

That's not necessarily bad, it just wasn't what I thought this audiobook was about. I thought it was about a new or unique way of looking at death from the perspective of certain religious orders, but from what I heard, the brothers have the same sufferings and fears of death as any other man-on-the-street. Not that that's bad. These brothers are just people too, but I already know that death and suffering is scary and hard on those around it. I thought this was a different view, not just more of the same.

There are a number of other good reviews on this title, so perhaps I just wasn't getting the point, or if I had finished the work then maybe it would have made more sense, but I'm the type of person that doesn't continue an audiobook (or regular book) if I find it uninteresting, and that's ultimately how I felt about this title, uninterested.

I already liked John Stossel, but this book really sealed the deal. I always appreciate how John asks tough questions but with respect. It's a rare trait, but John's got it.

I wrote this book so I realize my opinion is more than a little biased. However, I still enjoy reading it and, with the excellent narration from Dane Petersen, it really brings the story to life for me. I couldn't be happier with how this turned out.
