Enjoyable as usual
Revisado: 07-01-24
I have listened to all of the Orphan X series and enjoyed very much. For whatever reason, for the first time, this one didn’t have the same cachet as the others. Might have been me. It just felt a little slower than the others. I didn’t feel like I HAD TO get through it.

Historia
Burning pyres, nuns on the run, stirring courage, and comic relief: the Protestant Reformation is a gripping tale, packed with drama. But what motivated the Reformers? And what were they really like? The Unquenchable Flame is a lively, accessible, and informative introduction to the Reformation by Michael Reeves, bringing to life the movement's most colorful characters: Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, the Puritans, and others.

Great book but narration is lacking
Revisado: 06-30-23
An informative and enjoyable review of the reformation, only lacking in the somewhat stiff reading of the narrator.

Historia
So begins this suspenseful, impeccably researched history that draws on new access to diaries to tell the story of three men who were intimately involved with America’s decision to drop the atomic bomb—and Japan’s decision to surrender. They are Henry Stimson, the American Secretary of War, who oversaw J. Robert Oppenheimer under the Manhattan Project; Gen. Carl “Tooey” Spaatz, head of strategic bombing in the Pacific, who supervised the planes that dropped the bombs; and Japanese Foreign Minister Shigenori Togo.

Historia
W. H. Auden once wrote that "art is our chief means of breaking bread with the dead." In his brilliant and compulsively listenable new treatise, Alan Jacobs shows us that engaging with the strange and wonderful writings of the past might help us live less anxiously in the present - and increase what Thomas Pynchon once called our "personal density." Today we are battling too much information in a society changing at lightning speed, with algorithms aimed at shaping our every thought - plus a sense that history offers no resources, only impediments to overcome or ignore.

Alan Jacobs is great
Revisado: 06-14-23
I think that perhaps this book would have been better for me personally in written form rather than Audible. That’s not a knock on Jacobs but on me. But it may suggest to others that you’ll need a quick mind to follow by listening.

Couldn’t get invested
Revisado: 06-01-23
It was a somewhat interesting story. But I couldn’t get invested in the characters, so I didn’t really care about the outcome. I finished, but I sped it up.
