A decade of so ago, I devoured all of Josephine Tey’s remarkable procedural mysteries with alacrity. That was my mistake. By reading these stories hurriedly, I missed their genius as novels: especially their exquisite character portrayals. By listening to these stories slowly in Audible, I came to appreciate one of the very best authors of mystery stories in English. In my view, better than Christie or Sayers.

Thay‘s teachings on peace-making in his own voice are eternally profound. His views on the wars in Vietnam and Iraq carry over into future wars. His insight on peace is powerful.

This classic English murder mystery takes place in a secluded English mansion during a Christmas blizzard. If you know your 18th century English history, you can solve the story. A favorite of mine in book format, this Audible narration surpassed the experience.

This gripping Christmas mystery is a masterpiece, though it is somewhat flawed by the narrator who does not do well with the many male voices in the tale, though McCadden is superb with the female voices. Two narrators would have been perfect.

This collection from Agatha Christie had several delightful surprises. It opens with an autobiographical memoir of Christmas dinner from Christie herself. And one story in the collection turns out to be in a different genre altogether : a delightful romance in the style of F Scott Fitzgerald. The Christie stories are exquisitely read by Fenella Woolgar. Perfect solace for a winter’s night in the year of the plague.

Of the opera omnia I have read from Wodehouse, this is my favorite Blandings novel from prose to plot. Jonathan Cecil is the perfect narrator, making it even more fun to listen than to peruse, as much as I treasure reading Wodehouse slowly.
