Historia
Through a particularly ill-fated series of events, couch potato Maeve Kelly, an elementary school teacher whose mother always assured her curvy girls shouldn't waste their time trying to be fit, has been forced to sign up for the Other Half, Bath's springtime half marathon. The training is brutal, but she must disprove her mother and collect pledges for her aunt's beloved charity. What Maeve doesn't know is just how vicious some of the other runners are.

Excellent new reader
Revisado: 12-05-24
Like anyone who has endured a terrible mid-series voice actor recasting, I was quite skeptical about Peter Diamond being taken over by a new reader. How could anyone match up to the great Simon Pebble, right?
Well, what a pleasant surprise this turned out to be! Once your brain has had a chapter or two to adjust, you’ll probably realize that this reader is truly top notch. Such an enjoyable listen! (Dare I say he might even be a bit better?)

Historia
Deep in the California woods on an evening in late August, Jane Pearson is camping with her husband, Leo, and their five-year-old son, Benjamin. As dusk sets in, she drifts softly to sleep in a hammock strung outside the tent where Leo and Benjamin are preparing for bed. At that moment, every single person with a Y chromosome vanishes around the world, disappearing from operating theaters mid-surgery, from behind the wheels of cars, from arguments and acts of love. Children, adults, even fetuses are gone in an instant. Leo and Benjamin are gone. No one knows why, how, or where.

Spoh-KANN, not Spoh-KAIN
Revisado: 10-28-24
Hate it so much when no director. editor, producer, etc. catches really blatant mispronunciations throughout eight hours of voice work. Terrible production value.
The reader is only marginal, but even if she had been better, I’d still recommend reading this one yourself. The writing just doesn’t really execute well as a read-aloud.

Historia
When globe-hopping British First Secretary Peter Darwin returns to his childhood home for a visit, he is sorry. Waiting for him were long-hidden memories, a string of racehorse deaths and homicide. As Darwin begins to realize that the key to all of it involves his own past, he wishes he'd never come back, because he just might never leave again—alive.

Truly terrible recording quality
Revisado: 07-06-24
As has been mentioned, this is so badly recorded that it’s astonishing it was even published. Sounds like Britton called his reading in to a 1970s answering machine rape via an old-school transatlantic phone line. (For those who are old enough to recall such things.)

Chandler… meh…
Revisado: 05-26-24
This is a decent series for passing time as long as you don’t find Chandler’s somewhat over the top melodramatic reading too off putting. I personally think he has completely missed the mark on tone and pace, and his female characterizations leave quite a lot to be desired. I’m completely mystified by the author’s and publisher’s decision to continue having him voice the entire series.
Every time I’ve listened to one, I’ve quickly found myself thinking, “I think I’ll just read the rest of these on my e-reader instead of enduring the grating audio version”. Then, after many months and many, many other books, I’m scrolling the library for a basic time-filler, and I see that I haven’t finished this series. So I start listening to another volume. And very quickly I recall my thoughts during the previous eight books. Sigh.
Anyway. Not literature, by any stretch of the imagination, but engaging characters, storylines that hold the attention, and an interesting setting and context. Solid beach reads without any fluff or “chick lit” nonsense.

Historia
When English agent Gene Hawkins told his boss he'd forego his vacation to search for millionaire Dave Teller's prized missing stallion, he didn't know his retainer would include the attention of his boss's beautiful teenage daughter - or Teller's seldom sober wife. He also didn't know that a trail from London to New York to Las Vegas to California would lead eventually to murder.

Not Simon Prebble
Revisado: 03-29-24
When I began listening to this book, Audible had the reader misidentified as Simon Prebble. I went back and checked it 5-6 times throughout the first couple of chapters because it was so clearly not Simon. I see that it’s since been corrected, but thought I’d mention it in case anyone else runs in to the same issue, and is caught off guard.
In any case, this excellent reading by Geoffrey Howard was at least as good as any by Simon… dare I say better? Certainly not an unpleasant surprise at all.

Historia
A young woman is dumped, injured and unconscious, in a private hospital's parking lot. She is an amnesiac with no memory prior to her discovery by hospital personnel. Detective Inspector Peter Diamond of the Bath homicide squad is unwilling to become involved. He has other, more important cases to solve: a woman has plunged to her death from the roof of a local landmark while half the young people of Bath partied below, and an elderly farmer has shot himself.

Good story, poorly read.
Revisado: 02-21-24
I’d hoped this reader would improve after the last book. Sadly, he’s still just the wrong guy for this series.
The story was very good—probably the best one so far—but I wish I’d read it myself in print rather than enduring the audio version.

Really loved hearing Henry’s backstory. I’ve always been fond of his character, and now he’s my fav.
As the book began, I found the switch to Cork’s first person narration more than a little offputting. But, once the story focus shifts to Henry’s tale, it all comes together beautifully.

Not bad
Revisado: 02-13-24
Chandler’s reading seems to have improved somewhat. Is that to do with his age? Him adapting to the material? A better director? Or maybe it’s just me getting used to him? Whatever it is, I appreciate it.
The story was interesting and creative but I have to say… Krueger’s repeated reliance on the “rich people are evil” trope is getting old. I really hope to see him working away from that theme as the series continues.

Terrible reading and not a series???
Revisado: 02-09-24
Over-the-top voicing made it incredibly difficult to finish. If the reading style and/or voice talent matters to you, then I advise you to avoid this one. It’s just all wrong on so many levels, a fact that is not at all apparent in the sample.
FURTHERMORE, and far more importantly…
How on earth is this considered part of a series called “Joe Talbert” when that character appears literally NOWHERE in this story? The main reason I stuck with it to the end was to see whether a connection to the first book would EVER appear.
Spoiler: it does not. There is ZERO tie-in to the first book. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
Glad it was included in my membership. I’d be utterly pissed off if I’d have paid for this nonsense. 😡

Disappointed
Revisado: 02-04-24
A story that was not as good as the first books in the series (far fetched, long-winded, and a weirdly abrupt ending), was made much worse by a less-than-ideal reading. He’s not a particularly bad reader, just a poor match to the material, especially in comparison to the prior books. Obviously it’s sometimes necessary to cast someone different, but I wish they’d been more selective. The next few books are also performed by this reader. If he doesn’t improve, I’ll have to switch to reading the books myself.
