Historia
Matthew Continetti gives a sweeping account of movement conservatism’s evolution, from the Progressive Era through the present. He tells the story of how conservatism began as networks of intellectuals, developing and institutionalizing a vision that grew over time, until they began to buckle under new pressures, resembling national populist movements. Drawing out the tensions between the desire for mainstream acceptance and the pull of extremism, Continetti argues that the more one studies conservatism’s past, the more one becomes convinced of its future.

A Marriage as imperfect as ever
Revisado: 05-11-22
Matt Continetti provides a masterful exploration on the history of American conservativism stretching back to the 1920s. As conservativism has been shaped by populist inflections and institutional imperatives, the relationship between populism and conservativism has at times been strained, and may even be corrupted at this present time, but when they are in sync, there's no denying that conservativism's impulse to curtial liberalism's excesses has at times animated an energetic nexus of intellectuals, ideas, and politicians that has shaped American politics and life for the past century, and surely will again.

Historia
Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

An essential read
Revisado: 04-22-22
Michael Shellenberger lays claim to the title "environmental humanist" with the reality that an all-of-the-above energy approach is not just optional, but essential to human flourishing. He reminds us to remember the humans affected by these policies and be sure to include their experiences as they require reliable energy to escape poverty. And he carefully explains why we need less existential alarmism and more environmental realism. Truly an essential read for anyone interested in energy policy, environmental science, and the truth about climate science.

David French offers a compelling look at the sorting and grouping of like-minded Americans into distinct political and cultural zones and explores downright riveting scenarios for possible causes of secessions. He concludes with a passionate case for the 'live and let live' federalism of the Founders intent as the only way free people can deescalate and live with our differences.

Historia
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

Grand Ole Populists
Revisado: 08-16-19
The first half of Tim Alberta's book focuses on how the TEA Party insurgence turned itself into a predictable racket, perfecting as political strategy overpromising, under-delivering, and lashing out at detractors. The GOP was primed for a populist takeover but it took making peace with a celebrity to get the power and what happens when that celebrity leaves is anyone's guess.

Historia
Only once in the last 250,000 years have humans stumbled upon a way to lift ourselves out of the endless cycle of poverty, hunger, and war that defines most of history. If democracy, individualism, and the free market were humankind’s destiny, they should have appeared and taken hold a bit earlier in the evolutionary record. The emergence of freedom and prosperity was nothing short of a miracle.

A book for the ages, a way to examine the moment we find ourselves in with the right tone and animation. Jonah describes our suicide perfectly, an example of what NASA calls "orbital decay" as the failure to appreciate and maintain the principles that made the "miracle" of capitalism possible risks forgetting them and allowing the miracle to decay and eventually expire.

Historia
Conventional political wisdom views the two most consequential presidents of the 20th century - FDR and Ronald Reagan - as ideological opposites. FDR is hailed as the champion of big-government progressivism manifested in the New Deal. Reagan is seen as the crusader for conservatism dedicated to small government and free markets. But Henry Olsen argues that this assumption is wrong.

The REAL Reagan and principles to live by
Revisado: 09-27-17
Olsen's historian approach breathes new life into the saga of Ronald Reagan, revealing that it is principle, not ideology, that drove him. All politics boils down to principles and it's easy to see why Reagan was so successful by wearing his love for the American people on his sleeve. All politicians would do well to follow his lead and remember that it is outcomes people want, not process, not ideological exercises. Principled politics led by principled leaders, not ideologues.
