Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

I have been a Ken Follett fan for years. I couldn't stop listening to the book. Follett is a master story teller. I've learned so much about the history of life during the Dark Ages. The characters are drawn vividly so that they come alive.
I highly recommend this book. If it is your first Follett book, you will want to read more of his books.

Historia
Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England. It’s the sort of place where doctors and lawyers and old-money academics live. It’s not the sort of place where people get stabbed in the back 30 times with a kitchen knife in their own homes. Someone must have seen something. Newlywed Joey Mullen, for example, recently returned from four years of working in Ibiza. She and her husband, Alfie, are eager to find a place of their own in her hometown. But Joey finds herself distracted by the man next door, Tom Fitzwilliam.

It took me longer to get into this book than the others I've read from this author. I am a fan of hers, but the story was not as strong.

A superior listening experience
Revisado: 07-19-20
I couldn't stop listening. We hear about and see in the news about refugees. In this book, I lived it. The story centers around a family living in poverty in Comeroon, Africa. The main characters, the parents had no way to take themselves out of poverty.Their dream was for a new life in America. With help they were able to move to America and live in Harlem. They had some very good luck and then fell into poverty again. The narrator was excellent. I highly recommend Behold the Dreamers.

a real page turner
Revisado: 07-01-20
Years ago I read several of Maeve Binchy's books and then went on to find other authors. I rediscovered her when I was searching around for a new book to listen to. Tara Road is an exquisite book in every way. Between the loves of some and betrayals of others. It all began when an American woman and an Irish one decided to swap houses for the summer and the changes that took place in both of them. They both had experienced heartbreak and wanted ti get away. I don't want to give away too much. Ms Binchy knows how to tug at the heartstrings as well enrich her characters. I Highly recommend Tara Road.

Historia
Uwem Akpan's stunning stories humanize the perils of poverty and violence so piercingly that few listeners will feel they've ever encountered Africa so immediately. The eight-year-old narrator of "An Ex-Mas Feast" needs only enough money to buy books and pay fees in order to attend school. Even when his twelve-year-old sister takes to the streets to raise these meager funds, his dream can't be granted. Food comes first. His family lives in a street shanty in Nairobi, Kenya, but their way of both loving and taking advantage of each other strikes a universal chord.

We hear about the poverty and atrocities in Africa. The story follows a family, their naiveté, sadness and their love for each other. I felt their emotions, fear and heartache. It is beautifully written and the narration exceptional. I highly recommend this book.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss - a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten - by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare - one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. Revisado: 02-17-20
This is a heart wrenching story about a woman and her son who lost 16 members of their family by a cartel in Alcapulco. They started their arduous journey to the USA. They, along with other refugees they befriended along the way showed tremendous courage and bonded. The writing was excellent and the narrator was one of the best I've listened to. I highly recommend this book.

Sad, but worth reading.
Revisado: 11-27-16
There is a racial theme between an American woman, a Chinese husband and the dynamics of exclusion of the oriental looking children and their dad. The family is a complex one with tragedy and the family trying to heal. The mother has transferred her aspirations to Lydia to excel and become a doctor. The narrator is very good.

Mesmerizing and captivating
Revisado: 12-10-15
Would you listen to When the Moon Is Low again? Why?
No. I don't enjoy listening to the same book twice. However, I really enjoyed it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of When the Moon Is Low?
When Saleem was separated from his family and persevered to reunite with them under harrowing circumstances.
Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene was when Saleem helped the prostitute and then she helped him.Salem, in spite of his circumstances, showed that he was still a compassionate boy.
If you could take any character from When the Moon Is Low out to dinner, who would it be and why?
It would be Salem. I would want to ask him what made him so strong and how that trait helped him. He was so smart and always tried to find a way. I hope he made it to his family. I want to think he did.
Any additional comments?
I would highly recommend this book. I just couldn't stop listening. The narrator's performance was excellent.
