Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Lacks Drama
Revisado: 07-16-24
Going in I knew nothing about this novel nor the author. Someone must have suggested it to me, but I don't recall it. To me, this novel was primarily about world building. The author is spectacularly good at scenes involving characters interacting with one another, in a way that other authors can only aspire to. I was wowed again and again by they way she weaved descriptive text into the dialog. But the story reads like a historical piece, where we all know how everything turns out in the end. The story is built like that of a 17th century court piece, with kings and queens and houses and diplomacy and trade. But it lacks all of the back stabbing and intrigue. Everyone works together as a team and everyone has humanities best interest at heart. Everyone, except for the "bad guys" that is, whom we never meet. They are at best a distant, dismissed, threat. So again, where does the drama come from? There is a sprinkling of personal drama here and there, but only for characters who tend to be left behind when the story moves on. We are only told how the main characters feel. They don't experience anything for us. In general far too much is described rather than lived. I spent most of the novel wondering if I was supposed to know more about what was going on. The last chapter explained what had happened, what the consequences were, and what the future held for the characters. Need I say more?

Obvious errors of fact derail a great book
Revisado: 02-09-22
I really enjoyed this book at first, and imagined writing a glowing review. Ms. Teitel's performance is excellent, and the way she brought Jackie Cochran to life is too. The first time I found myself shaking my head was when the author confused the controls of a plane, describing the rudder as being used to roll the plane side to side. "Poorly worded," I thought, and I moved on. Then she describes Cochran putting the nose of her plane down in order to slow the plane. Anyone who knows even a little bit about flying could have told her this is simply not how flying works. I listened to that part several times, each time rolling my eyes. With my confidence now shaken, I continued on, but I began to wonder if the historical facts had similar errors. After the description of the crash at Cochran's first Bendix race, I had a thought: what if I did a little fact checking? She described this crash of a heavy loaded plane as creating a giant fireball. I found no reports of a fireball, and one report that the plane had not caught fire, even though it was laden with fuel, and a picture of the wreckage with no sign of a fire at all. At this point, with a heavy heart because I was enjoying the title, I decided to stop listening.
