Historia
Hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear about someone committing a violent, reprehensible, even evil, act. And each time it happens, before we know anything about the circumstances, we are already sure of one thing: We are nothing like that perpetrator. But how can we be so sure? After all, we are all human. In Understanding the Dark Side of Human Nature, Professor Daniel Breyer takes us on a fascinating philosophical journey into many of the deepest and darkest questions that have engaged humanity for millennia.

Unexpectedly enjoyed
Revisado: 01-02-21
I wasn't completely sure of what I was getting with this title. I'm not a psychologist or philosopher. It turned out to be one of the most interesting books I've purchased. It's well narrated with a voice that isn't grating in 30 minute lectures that ar easily digested by a complete novice, such as myself. While psychology, sociology & philosophy are all referenced It's not so in depth that it completely loses the listener. For me the best parts are the way the author links theories to everyday behavior. It definitely made me rethink how I process interactions and events.

While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies....

Exceptional book
Revisado: 12-07-20
I am new to this author. She is unabashedly honest in the context for historical events and the driving force behind many decisions. It is refreshing to hear more historians speak up and make the past come to life. Past events have direct relevance to current experiences.
I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading others written by this author.

An Incredible Conversation
Revisado: 11-28-20
I was hoping to hear Howard Zinnia speak personally and was a little disappointed that it's a reading of an in depth interview. A transcript. That being said it was illuminating as always to hear his personal perspective on history and how we shape the narrative to suit the needs of the time.
I have long admired his devotion to the hinest telling of history. Our forefathers were not perfect. We should share their legacy in a more human way. Highly recommended for the history lover in you.

Historia
In 1950, after over 50 years of military occupation and colonial rule, the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico staged an unsuccessful armed insurrection against the United States. Violence swept through the island: Assassins were sent to kill President Harry Truman, gunfights roared in eight towns, police stations and post offices were burned down. In order to suppress this uprising, the US Army deployed thousands of troops and bombarded two towns.

Intense and Difficult to Read
Revisado: 11-23-20
I heard some parts of these experiences from family members but they played down and never wanted to really discuss how bad it was then. This book provides insight into how the American government systematically set out to destroy the Puerto Rican people. A century of purposeful neglect, mismanagement, disinformation and genocide outlined in these pages.

When he opened the FBI investigation into Russia’s election interference, Peter Strzok had already spent more than two decades defending the United States against foreign threats. His career in counterintelligence ended shortly thereafter, when the Trump administration used his private expression of political opinions to force him out of the Bureau in August 2018. But by that time, Strzok had seen more than enough to convince him that the commander in chief had fallen under the sway of America’s adversary in the Kremlin.

Engaging & Informative
Revisado: 11-19-20
I decided to read this just to see the different perspectives. So many books gave come out during this administration. I found it refreshing to read facts in context of experience.
I am sure there will be alot of political preferences saying negative things. It felt fair and balanced in the retelling of moments in hindsight. Hopeful even. It is a long dry read but worth the time if experience interests you.

Cops, politicians, and ordinary people are afraid of black men. The result is the Chokehold: laws and practices that treat every African American man like a thug. In this explosive new book, an African American former federal prosecutor shows that the system is working exactly the way it's supposed to. Black men are always under watch, and police violence is widespread - all with the support of judges and politicians.

Extraordinary, Timeless & Scary
Revisado: 08-10-20
I have had so many conversations with my son about interactions with law enforcement from so many perspectives. This is eye opening from a prosecutor's perspective. It is straightforward & direct. Paul Butler pulls no punches but leaves the reader feeling informed. A little healthy fear is sometimes warranted.
I have give this to my daughters to continue family legacy of education.

Historia
In Why We’re Polarized, Klein reveals the structural and psychological forces behind America’s descent into division and dysfunction. Neither a polemic nor a lament, this book offers a clear framework for understanding everything from Trump’s rise to the Democratic Party’s leftward shift to the politicization of everyday culture. America is polarized, first and foremost, by identity. Everyone engaged in American politics is engaged, at some level, in identity politics.

Revisado: 08-05-20
I expected nothing less than a clear, concise message from Ezra Klein. His writing is thoughtful, open, and willing to explore conversations we have not had as a community. I highly recommend this book as it is easy to read/listen and honest about personal perspectives and biases.

Towards Zero: What is the connection among a failed suicide attempt, a wrongful accusation of theft against a schoolgirl, and the romantic life of a famous tennis player? To the casual observer, apparently nothing. But when a house party gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of an elderly widow, earlier events come to a dramatic head. Ordeal By Innocence: According to the courts, Jacko Argyle bludgeoned his mother to death with a poker. The sentence was life imprisonment.

Extraordinary writing
Revisado: 03-02-20
I am fairly new to this author. I found his writing style direct, compelling and informative. It gave me a different perspective on things I thought but didn't know how to convey.
It is easy to understand how some Americans might find this unsettling as it does directly address the myth of beneficial capitalism. My take is capitalism is a beast to be managed not allowed to run wild & unfettered. Much like anything in this world too much of a good thing will kill you.
I look forward to reading this book again and highly recommend it.

In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Holy crap!
Revisado: 11-28-19
Disclaimer: I am an avid TRMS daily devotee. :) Naturally, my love of TRMS couldn't allow me not to read this one. I was not at all prepared for the detail and depth of the facts involving American business/politics and Russia going back decades. I started this thinking I had a grip on US/Russia policies. I knew nothing but surface information from industry commercials on TV over the years. Tenuous links I thought might be there but brushed away in the past are laid out in graphic detail.
There are a lot of players in this decades long narrative. I have listened to it three times. It is fascinating exactly how much we don't know when we don't hold our politicians accountable for their actions and relationships.
