In my youth I read of Crossfield, Yeager, Grissom, Glenn, Shepard, Kittinger and the others who had "the right stuff". The "mission" related stories are all great, but this book gave me some depth and breadth across one of these characters, and it is a very enjoyable read. I'd like to see similar books from the other heros of this era.

Some may not like Joe's free and frank patriotic expression. For me Joe tells it like it was in that era. Ours it not to judge, but to appreciate what they lived through.

I really liked and recommend the later chapters. Joe and his wife keeps on giving. This book will not disappoint a historian, an adventurer, or any flyboy or flygirl.

A good story that got buried in detail

While I don't generally like abridged books, this book could have been successfully shortened, keeping the great story line, but skipping the very detailed explanations of aircraft and ship performance specifications and dimensions as well as minute detail about ships courses and the like. In summary, the details sometimes got in the way of a good story.

This is generally easier to filter out in a print book, but doesn't transfer easily to an audiobook,

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Jules Verne's books are classics, but the language of the time makes them a little inaccessible. This narration added life to the language of old, making a classic enjoyable.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Nothing really. The text is what it is. The narration makes it accessible to today's audience

What does Tim Curry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Pronunciation, timing, character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Others have already made the film, which I watched many years ago. This story allowed me to finally read (listen to) the book behind that movie
