A Wrinkle in Time Audiolibro Por Madeleine L'Engle arte de portada

Nice book, horrible narration.

Nice story, but what a horrible narration! The author-reader clearly has a speech impediment with words with "s" and "th", which makes listening to the book a painful activity. It would have much 10 times better with a professional actor reading it.

Such a waste of time...

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 11-10-08

I listened to the first book of the saga, and I thought it has been a real waste of time.
Given the hype around the Wheel of Time, I decided to try book number 2, and I must say it has been an even bigger waste of time: void story, uninteresting characters, repetitions over repetitions, not to talk about the 'blood and ashes' mantra, which one of the characters repeats ad nauseam. I am sure it is my limitation, but I really cannot understand what's so good in these books, and my adventure with the 'Wheel of Time' ends here.
The only positive note I can think of is the narration, which is really well done.

Exceptionally well done, and many thanks to Audible for making it available to us. The only criticism I can make is that the background music which is accompanying the whole of the recording is great at first, but it tends to distract the listener after a while: at least, I find sometimes myself drifting my attention from the spoken word to the music. However, this doesn’t take anything away from the great value of this book.

If you like Stephen King, you will like this book. I loved it from the first until the last page. I wish I could tell you more, but that would spoil the fun of reading it, and take away most of it! I also wished a different ending, even if I knew way before being done what would have happened. In short: a really sad story, which is talking directly to the heart.

I always knew about this book (who never heard about "Big Brother"?), but I never read it. Now that I did, I understand why it is so famous worldwide. A great story, perfectly written and perfectly read. The narrator did really a great job, and after the first few minutes, when you have the weird feeling that somebody is reading the book to you over the phone, the narration really gets you into the story. Definitely, a 5 stars book!

I'm afraid I missed the point on this one...

Revisado: 10-19-05

Given the high number of 5 stars reviews, I have no doubt believing that it is me who missed the point with this book. However, it is the first time that I listen to an audio book and my mind keeps wandering around all the time, I found very difficult staying focused and I had to listen to several portions over and over again. I didn't find anything special in the story, and the characters didn't inspire any particular feeling in me.
Even the narration was not that great: the narrator's voice is nice and soothing, but I think a voice like that would be more appropriate for a meditation tape than for a fantasy book.
In short: no doubts the book deserves 5 stars, but for what I'm concerned, my adventure with the Kingdoms and the Elves ends here!

Just plain wonderful!

I loved "Ender?s Game", but I loved "Speaker for the Dead" even more. I particularly liked the fact that, from a certain standpoint, the story is completely different from the one of "Ender?s Game", and I loved all the psychology hidden in the book.
The narration is really good, the only criticism I could make is that "Little Miss Drama" (adopting the nickname invented by another reviewer) is really overly dramatic most of the times, and therefore she tends to get annoying.
All in all, a book not to be missed that makes me looking forward to the next one in the saga!

This time, definitely a 5 stars!

After "It", I think this is the best book I have read so far by Stephen King. It is a wonderful and unpredictable ghost story, the characters are so real you could almost "touch" them, and the storyline evolves really swiftly.

This would have been a 4 stars (great book, but not a masterpiece), the 5th star is coming from the narration (the value of having the book read by the Author is out of doubt: whilst not a trained actor, he is clearly the one in the best position to catch and transmit all the nuances of the story) and from the interview at the end of the book, which is really interesting and helpful in getting into the story even more. Great job, mister King!

Not that enthusiastic...

I did the mistake of listening to this book after having read (probably for the 10th time) the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I couldn't help but notice that the Author has been drawing a little bit too much from Tolkien: the frail man, the druid appearing and disappearing, the elf stones (replacing the ring) and so on and so forth. The plot is pretty weak and the story is really predictable. However, there are some nice intuitions that, together with the fact that the story unfolds reasonably well, make the book a nice one-off reading. I also think the narrator did a very good job: it?s not easy to read something not particularly exciting for 26 hours, I guess...
