Suspended Belief?
Revisado: 04-23-25
So many reviews praised this work because the science is believable. No need to suspend belief because there is no faster than light travel, etc. Um, FTL is more believable than the premise of this novel. Even the completely unbelievable premise of the bob verse was more believable. Unless you’re as obsessed with your penis as the author is I’d pass on this one.
The narrator had a nice cadence & with appropriate emphasis. His character voices are vanilla and not consistent from chapter to chapter.
This is my 4th waste of a credit in a row. If you’re reading this I implore you to start leaving honest detailed reviews.

Historia
When Delaney wins a special Hidden Door Festival invitation to artist Ryory Bennigan's studio, she isn't sure quite what to expect. What she finds is an elusive fellow obsessed with the Picts—complete with his own versions of their blue tattoos and vibrant red hair—recreating the stones they left behind. She also meets a visiting paleontologist, Dr. Adam Pace, from the University of Kansas attempting to sell an artifact that might just explain what the Picts' language really sounded like.

Such a disappointment
Revisado: 04-05-25
From the start this series was Polly-Anna-perfect, plots and conclusions always required a fair bit of belief suspending. But I bought them all and listened to them each more than once. Fluff, but fairly well written. No repeated phrases running through each book. No ‘he said’, ‘she said’ ad nausium. Honestly Carrington MacDuffie narration was a good enough reason to listen. Brilliant accents, narration, enunciation, etc.
This book was so bland I lost interest over and over. I listened to some chapters 3 & 4 times because I keep my attention on the drivel that the horrific narration droned into my brain. Last Shelton I pay for. Darn it.

Terrific narrator
Revisado: 03-06-25
Deleon does a remarkable job continuing to craft stories based around the same people, same situations, similar plots. The characters are, for the most part, well fleshed out and reasonably believable.
It is true Deleon does repeat several phrases throughout the book(s) which is jarring, but the worst is how often she uses ‘she said, ‘I said’ and ‘he said’ Sooo often, soooo very often.
The multi-generational aspect is refreshing. Personally my closest girlfriends are 20 years older and 20 years younger than myself.
The true star is the narrator. Pleasing voice, good enunciation, good pacing & emphasis. So many character voices and each unique enough to recognize. And she pauses at the end of a chapter!! That is rare and yet so useful to the listener.

“Alexa, stop playing this horrible awful book.”
I have read or listened to every Murderbot in excess of 6 times each and I still enjoy the stories and the layered nuances of language.
So what the hell? The story is convoluted, difficult to follow, and harps on how monstrously women were treated 100+ years ago. So much so that it seems that might have been the point of the book. Make that a part of the story, sure. The entire story, no.
And the narrator. Oh my God. Her voices are badly executed. Worse than badly. And the cadence is awkward. It’s as if she’s not sure where to breathe out in any given sentence. I couldn’t listen to this. It was a terrible waste of 3 hours.

Laundry List
Revisado: 12-23-24
There are maybe 2 areas of the story that move the plot forward. Although the plot is so weak it’s difficult to find.
The narrative is a minute by minute blow by blow narrative.
Turn to the starboard Mr Taylor.’ Mate sir, turning to the starboard.’ Josh’s hands fly across the console as he pushes this button, the that button, followed by switch a, b, & q. This order of pushing and flipping had been worked out by the designers on earth after much careful study and preparation. Have followed the order of flipping and pushing the slowly turns, meter by meter. ‘Shipped turned, sir. ‘
If that’s yer thing this book won’t make skim or lose your patience. Although if that’s yer thing IS your thing enlisting might be a better use of your time.

Wonderfully written
Revisado: 12-11-24
As always Paige hits it out of the park. Often authors of long running series get sloppy, load the book with drivel and filler, this author does not do it. She writes each Bo el as well as the first.
The narrator, however, was awful. The accents were embarrassing to listen to and the book was read stiff and stilted. More like a medical text book than a novel.

Three times longer than necessary
Revisado: 11-09-24
Note to author: first person narrative is the not the easiest to pull off, it is the most difficult. You didn’t manage even the most basic version of that. Spend some time learning your craft and take time to lay everything out so the narrative follows a logical and progressing order of events. Boring cannot begin to describe this long, meandering and repetitive work.

Tedious
Revisado: 11-09-24
The author has a poor understanding of first person narrative. Every action does not need to be explained in the character’s head. Humans do not do that in real life practice, and so, neither should the author in a fictional setting. This author did this consistently as well as explaining the actions of others. ‘Barb nodded at me because she knew I was in control and trusted that I …’ how would anyone other than Barb KNOW what Barb was thinking? Where explanation would have been helpful was in providing the audience with the details of his universe. Useful details could have made it possible to find a reason to care if any of the characters lived or died. I couldn’t bring myself to care.

The story was the expected sugary confection but the narration! Among the worst I’ve ever listened to. The accents are inaccurate, all characters sound the same. Bad. Just bad.

Was I meant to believe any of this?
Revisado: 08-28-24
Or to care whether or not any of the characters lived or died? If I was, the author failed.
The plot is …well I couldn’t find it so I don’t know what it was meant to be.
All of the action is contrived to such a degree that I not only couldn’t find the plot but I stopped caring if any of the characters lived or died a chapter in.
Save your time & money.
