DeMille does it again!
Revisado: 01-27-23
I went back to listen to this book which I had read when it was first published. I think it’s gotten better with age. DeMille is such a good story teller. His weaving webs of intrigue and evidence in mysteries is masterful. Scott Brick does his usual superb job of bringing all of the characters to life and makes each so believable. I’ve read (or listened to all of the author’s works and they have all been entertaining, provocative, and memorable. A 17+ hours audiobook can be a burden to get through, but The General’s Daughter found me looking for opportunities to keep listening. Kudos to the combo of DeMille and Brick.

Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Wonderful story with lots of very engaging and likable characters and enough plot twists to keep you interested. The narrator did a wonderful job. A highly recommended read (or listen). It made me want a pet giant Pacific octopus!

Historia
Mike Daley doesn't go to confession much since he left the priesthood twenty years ago and became a lawyer, but that doesn't stop his old friend, Father Ramon Aguirre, from trying to get him there. "It wouldn't kill you to go to church once in a while," he tells Mike. But it does kill someone. For several months, a ruinous sexual harassment suit has been building against the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese, and when the plaintiff's lawyer is found dead, an almost audible sigh of relief is heard.

Siegel does it again
Revisado: 07-08-22
Another wonderful listen by a master story teller. An excellent narration and a great array of memorable characters makes this book move well and be fun and engaging. Love the principle characters. There is enough injection of humor and sarcasm to keep a smile on my face while at the time trying I’m trying to unravel the case along with Mike and Rosy. The author’s knowledge of the courtroom and the maneuvering behind the scenes makes for very interesting material. I will download another in this series soon.

Revisado: 04-12-22
Sheldon Siegel had crafted a wonderful novel of legal maneuvering and exciting trial strategies. The story was very involving, with many twists and turns. It was hard to put down. An excellent performance by a gifted narrator made for an exciting and thoroughly engaging listen. Looking forward to more in this series.

Another Connelly gem
Revisado: 04-04-22
The Law of Innocence is another in a long line of gripping well written novels. Haller and Bosch are a great combination. The story flows beautifully and has e we bought twists and turns to keep the reader spellbound. The narrator was excellent. Great pace and voices. I had a hard time having to stop listening. If there was anything about the book that I didn’t like it was when Connelly injected anti-Trump elements. It was clearly his political bias and had nothing to do with the story line and certainly didn’t enhance the experience. If he wanted to write a political novel, he should have, but it was totally unnecessary and annoying in an otherwise wonderful story. I find myself wishing for another Lincoln Lawyer movie based on this book. It would be a winner.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She’s skipped multiple grades and doesn’t really connect with the older kids at school, but she’s not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie’s a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret - at least, that’s what she thinks.... But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well...she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth....

Enjoyable fantasy for all ages
Revisado: 03-21-22
Every now and then a writer creates a new world of fantasy and adventure that’s appropriate for youngsters and still enjoyable for adults of all ages. This book was recommend by one of our granddaughters (age 11). We decided to listen to have something we could share with her. The creative author and very talented narrator combined to produce a delightful story with many imaginative characters and plot twists to be thoroughly enjoyable. I will listen to more in the series and look forward to many good conversations with our granddaughter.

So Archer hops on a bus and begins the long journey out west to California, where rumor has it there is money to be made if you’re hard-working, lucky, criminal - or all three. Along the way, Archer stops in Reno, where a stroke of fortune delivers him a wad of cash and an eye-popping blood-red 1939 Delahaye convertible - plus a companion for the final leg of the journey, an aspiring actress named Liberty Callahan who is planning to try her luck in Hollywood.

Not up to Baldacci standards
Revisado: 11-12-21
I’ve been a fan of David Baldacci for years and have loved his wonderful array of well developed characters from the Camel Club through the Memory Man. This book left me feeling empty. I felt that the author’s attempt to create a period piece set in post WWII California was not very successful. Too frequently the dialog was so contrived and corny I had to ask myself if it was the writing or the performances. There were lots of story twists to keep you guessing, but overall it was certainly not one of Baldacci’s best.

Grisham’s love of sports shines.
Revisado: 09-18-21
Kudos to John Grisham for a wonderful book. It is very engrossing and paced well. As a reader, the whole gamut of emotions were called up. Dion Graham did a masterful job with his terrific narration, bringing all of the wonderful and believable characters to life. I’ve enjoyed all of Grisham’s novels, but it is fun to see how he seems to love sports stories. This, for me is one of his best. Keep them coming!

He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. Great sequel
Revisado: 08-24-21
Hats off to Andy Weir. The Martian is a tough act to follow! Hail Mary has a wonderful mix of science, suspense, and humor. The characters were nicely developed. The main character’s reluctance to be part of a suicide mission is not hard to understand but his acceptance ultimately of his fate shows him to be a true hero. The ingenuity he displayed was amazing (thanks to Weir’s scientific genius). I fell in love with Rocky and enjoyed the bond of friendship, love, and understanding the two space travelers developed. There were enough plot twists to keep me guessing throughout. I’m hoping a movie will follow as there is so much potential for a visual extravaganza and an exciting story line. A fun and engrossing book!
