Weird sound effects
Revisado: 10-08-24
The sound effects don't line up with the story and they're very loud. My kids love it, so I can't be too mad about that, but it's very sloppy

Wrong Narrator for the Story
Revisado: 03-16-22
The narrator wasn't a great fit for the story, accents, characters, etc, so I had a hard time getting into the book and enjoying it. The story was pretty good but I've definitely read/heard better books by Nora Roberts. Overall enjoyable, but could've been much better

Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Couldn't stop listening
Revisado: 11-12-19
First, the narration: I was able to listen at 1,5X which is really great when I can't stop listening even when I'm done commuting for the day. The narrator was easy to understand, even sped up, and all the main character voices were distinct. If I'm on the fence about a book in the future and January LaVoy is the narrator, that'll decide for me.
Now the story: The subject made it tough to listen to the first few chapters. It's a tough subject but Nora Roberts wrote the horror, panic, and heroes wonderfully. Once I moved on into the post-shooting part of the book, I couldn't stop listening. The characters are interesting and I cared about them and their lives. Without giving away anything the summary doesn't say, this was kind of a combination of the In Death villain chapters with a typical non-magic Nora Roberts book and some cops added in for good measure. One cop had a few Eve-Dallas-isms that made me smile as I listened, so that was a nice touch. Ms. Roberts definitely channeled her J.D. Robb persona as needed to write a well balanced, enjoyable book

Historia
The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born.

Not as good as usual
Revisado: 08-07-19
I love listening to Nora Roberts audiobooks. They usually have great narrators, like this one, and the stories are interesting enough to make my commute way better but not distracting enough to make driving dangerous.
I couldn't stop listening to this book, and listened on my commute to and from work even though I only usually listen on the way home. I couldn't wait to get to the action and find out what happened. I even listened at home a few times and sped up the audio to 1.75X which shows how clearly the narrator speaks.
The action was disappointing. The whole book felt like a mix of In Death victim and villain chapters mixed with chapters that could've been from Montana Sky, so while the combination was new, it didn't feel like it. If this book had been a trilogy, there would've been time to fit everything in better so the relationships could be more believable and the action could've taken more time. I didn't dislike any of the non-villain characters but I didn't feel as strongly towards them as I usually do in Nora Roberts books.

Historia
Whistling Tor is a place of secrets: a mysterious, wooded hill housing the crumbling fortress belonging to Anluan - a chieftain whose name is spoken throughout the region in tones of revulsion and bitterness. A curse lies over Anluan's family and his people, and the woods themselves hold a perilous force whose every whisper threatens doom. Then the young scribe Caitrin appears in Anluan's garden, admiring the rare plant known as heart's blood. Retained to sort through entangled family documents, Caitrin brings about unexpected changes.

One of my Favorite Authors
Revisado: 01-10-19
I love Juliet Marillier's other books so I was so excited to listen to one I haven't read before. Unfortunately, I couldn't listen to the narrator for the whole book and I ended up reading the rest on my kindle. The main character can be negative and almost whiny at times, but the narrator was almost always whiny, except for voices of other characters. The book itself was difficult to get into, but the narration didn't help. It got hard to put down towards the end, but a slow start mixed with a narrator I don't love could've led to me giving up if I didn't already love the author.
