The absolute craziness of this person to constantly stay with this monster!
Revisado: 06-10-24
If you are in any way empathic, this book is NOT for you! The horrendous things this girl does for this creep is just heartbreaking! And not a single person can help her even though she sees people everyday! It's a whole lot to swallow! Yes I understand she has Asperger's. But this girls entire family, her school her drs, all let her down. So hard for me to comprehend! But the final straw for me was the horrendous cruelty to a poor defenseless puppy! Why didn't she know that this man would mutilate her poor puppy?! It just kills me! I couldn't finish the book! There was no warning about the cruelty to animals! I NEVER would have purchased it! It's very traumatizing! Thanks a lot!

Historia
Gerri was only a young girl when she was first abused by her father. After her mother found out, and believing there was nothing she could do to help her child, nor deal with the stigma attached to it in their small Northern Irish town in the 1960s, she committed suicide. Gerri and her siblings were split up and placed in different foster homes, all knowing they were unlikely to see each other ever again. Told that her mother had committed a grave sin, Gerri was completely alone and abandoned as she confronted even more horrors from her past.

Revisado: 03-31-24
My hrart just broke for Gerry while reading this book! The depravity and horrors that she survived is mind blowing! I just wanted to reach out and hug her younger self! And I can't help but feel rage and fury for her tormentors!
Congratulations Gerry, on overcoming what must have seemed like the insurmountable odds that were stacked against you! Becoming the lovely woman that you have obviously become was your best revenge for those that tried to squash your spirit!
Best wishes and God bless you my dear! Thank you for sharing your story! I'll never forget it!

A haunting memoir of one woman's survival of childhood abuse and neglect. After All… is an inspiring story of how faith and a grandmother's unconditional love gave young Maria the strength to survive a loveless home and, incredibly, showed her the path to forgiveness. The memoir traces her journey from poverty in rural Portugal to a full and happy life in Canada.

Her need for pity
Revisado: 01-23-24
I did not like the narrator at all! She was way over acting! But I tolerated it to hear the story but I could not finish the book! It was so bizarre and unbelievable! The moment she said that she became her uncles sex slave, well that was it for me. If it was true, I just didn't like this person at all and didn't care to hear anymore of her story. There was no way I could have any sympathy for such a person. She was making herself out to have much better character than I feel she has.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

The stories are so thought provoking! And I know have brought me so much comfort! However Hadleys definitions of empathy and sympathy were totally reversed. One actually meaning what she described for the other. I just didn’t want that to confuse anyone.

Ruth Wariner was the 39th of her father's 42 children. Growing up on a farm in rural Mexico, where authorities turned a blind eye to the practices of her community, Ruth lives in a ramshackle house without indoor plumbing or electricity. At church, preachers teach that God will punish the wicked by destroying the world and that women can ascend to heaven only by entering into polygamous marriages and giving birth to as many children as possible.

To the reviewer who said, ”not interesting”
Revisado: 10-24-23
I really guess it does take all kinds to make the world. But that anyone could find this story not interesting, blows my mind! I find the mother absolutely fascinating! I would love to learn more about this enigmatic woman! The architect of 9 human beings, and has no compulsion whatsoever to allow them to know the truth of their birth and heritage! She lies and manipulates and apologizes to no one! Man! That’s fascinating! But then, one of those humans she gave birth to, grows up to become a family genealogist! What are the odds! Fact is so stranger than fiction! You couldn’t make this stuff up! I agree with many other comments regarding the monotone narration. What a big let down! I also agree that this could easily be a mini series! I know I’d watch it!! I really feel like the powers that be just didn’t know what a jewel they had here! Such a shame, too. They need to hire more capable people! They let this story slip through their fingers! What a waste! So glad I hung in there and listened to the end! I know it probably lost a lot of listeners in the beginning.

Excellent Eye Opener!
Revisado: 10-17-23
Frances Reilly is not only a courageous and talented woman! She’s a hero! To all the unfortunate girls that came into care after she came forward shining a light on the wicked secrets that those horrible nuns thought they had locked up in secrecy! Making it impossible for the nuns to continue to abuse and torture these poor trapped girls entrusted in their care, through no fault of their own! Its an excellent example showing that you can never leave a system to go without checks and balances! No matter how respectable and God fearing (not) the person in charge appears to be! The power these miserable nuns wielded, giving them the ability to abuse these girls is horrifying! The Catholic Church has a lot of answering to do, still! And I hope we never forget these valuable lessons in humanity that Frances Reilly is teaching us!
I thank God for Frances! And wish her only the very best! For her and all those that she loves and holds dear! What a brave soul! And shining example she is! What a gift to us all!
Also excellent narration by Emma Lowe! Very talented! Made listening a pleasure!
