Nothing good about this book. The storyline and the way it's written is sophomoric. The reader is terrible; his way of emphasizing and phrasing is simply terrible.

Too much angst
Revisado: 10-15-13
This is a general observation of the whole Dresden series. James Marsters is a superb reader; one of the best. I have enjoyed listening to this series because of him. The introspective soliloquies of Harry Dresden would be terminally boring without Marsters' rendition. The underlying story line is enjoyable and fun, but not seriously good, After all, this is a story about wizards, monsters, fairies, and ghosts. How serious could it be? There are very few Tolkiens. All in all, a flawed work but worth listening too. This is one of those works that are better listened to than read in printed form. I would skip most of the angst stuff, but it isn't too bad because of Marsters' performance.

God-awful
Revisado: 05-25-13
I didn't realize this was a romance novel; I thought it was a scifi book. The title of the book could have been "his obsidian eyes" which was the most commonly use phrase in the whole book, and possibly the high point of the verbiage offered. At one point she wanted to rip his clothes off "with her teeth." I simply couldn't listen to the whole book. I'm glad I bought it as a "special" deal for 4.95. I guess that Audible was desperate to sell it. God-awful. I deleted it half-way through, something I never do.

Historia
Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

Good reader.
Revisado: 11-18-11
Will Patton seems to be the perfect voice for Robicheaux. I spent almost 30 years at LSU and enjoy hearing the place names and being able to say, "Oh yeah, I know that place!" Sometimes he pronounces the place names differently than I do, but I'm not sure that my way is the correct way. I like the characters and I especially enjoy the descriptive prose that Burke uses. I would rather listen to the Robicheaux books than read them, and I am definitely a reader!

Terrible reader
Revisado: 11-18-11
The reader/performer used such inappropriate inflection and phrasing that she was really annoying to listen to. I very nearly deleted the book before I heard it all. She apparently didn't have any feel for the story she was reading. The main character was annoying also, and rather poorly drawn, in my opinion. No more Janet Evanovitch for me and I will try to avoid any books narrated by C.J. Critt.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

Exellent story, excellently read.
Revisado: 03-31-11
For me, a great book sux if it is poorly read. A mediocre book comes alive if it is well read. In this case, a pretty good book is read very well indeed.

How bad can it get?
Revisado: 03-27-11
Terrible. First, the narrator is absolutely awful. He reads each word independently of context, as if it weren't part of a phrase. He is reading words--not a story. The story itself is sophomoric but much better than the narration. I actually stopped listening and deleted it before I heard the whole book, and that is something I never do. Don't buy this book.
