The twists in the modern half of the story were so predictable i kept thinking I'd read the book before. But the characters were good and the actual writing was too so i listened for the entirety.

Fantastic opening chapter. Bogs slightly while filling in the background. Then picks back up. Shapiro is a good reader, but not.. um, let's say not one makes his own mark on the story. Which, as I consider it, with non fiction, that's not a bad thing. Is the author's sub-title premise proven? Debatable. Still an interesting read /listen, not a waste of time.

This is not to be taken seriously! 😉 The performances are really good. There address silly cross cultural references that amuse.

Any additional comments?

I am disappointed at the time lost listening to this. As other reviewers have commented, it gets very repetitive of the same information. The stories are repetitive of the same points.

I only listened to Chapter 7. I had two more hours of listening to do and Dr. Dwenk said something that just put me off. In that chapter, she made that statement that the Columbine killers had been bullied. This myth, created by the media during the immediate aftermath, has been refuted many times. (Indeed in Dave Cullen's excellent book, "Columbine," it is revealed that on occasions Harris and Klebold were bullies.) I recognize that this may seem a niggling complaint. But here is someone who is presenting herself as an expert researcher and she passes on wrong information. It just stopped me in my tracks. So, while I don't doubt Dr. Dwenk's expertise in her field I just lost total interest in what she had to say going forward.

What disappointed you about New York: The Ageless City?

This was more about his memories and his opinions. I was expecting something more ... well, I guess, scholarly.

Would you ever listen to anything by Deaver Brown again?

His voice wasn't bad, but the production quality was horrible. Sounded like it had been recorded via answering machine.
