Historia
Sexually innocent Jude Fawley is trapped into marriage by seductive Arabella Donn, but their union is an unhappy one and Arabella leaves him. Jude's welcome freedom allows him to pursue his obsession with his pretty cousin Sue Bridehead, a brilliant, charismatic free-thinker who would be his ideal soul-mate if not for her aversion to physical love. When Jude and Sue decide to lead their lives outside marriage they bring down on themselves all the force of a repressive society.

Great performance, wonderful story. What’s not to like? Narrator has a gorgeous British accent and is easily understood by this CT Yankee.

Historia
Lochdubh constable Hamish Macbeth's life is going to pot. He has - horrors! - been promoted, his new boss is a dunce, and a self-proclaimed traveler named Sean and his girlfriend have parked their rusty eyesore of a van in the middle of the village. Hamish smells trouble, and he's right, as usual. The doctor's drugs go missing. Money vanishes. Neighbors suddenly become unneighborly. The tension only explodes after the itinerant Sean is found brutally beaten to death in his camper.

Priscilla is English!
Revisado: 10-20-21
I think the narrator overdid it with the Scottish accents. I could barely understand half the dialogue. I’ve read nearly all of the Hamish Macbeth series, and I’ve never had this problem before. BTW, Priscilla and her family originally came from England. In all the other books, she speaks like a Brit. Oh well, still liked the story.

Simplistic and Fatuous
Revisado: 02-18-21
What useful information is contained in this book could be condensed into an article in The Ladies’ Home Journal. Particularly annoying is Dr. Chapman’s self-serving comments regarding his extraordinary success as a marriage counselor. I assume it’s there to flesh out the scanty content of the book.

Historia
Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

More depressing or more boring? You choose.
Revisado: 03-12-20
If you’re curious about what it’s like to live among nasty, petty, ignorant, debilitated old folks who have a great deal of difficulty getting along with their fellow inmates in a Dutch assisted living facility run by Gestapo-like administrators, this book is for you. Why would Derek Jacobi perform this book? As always, he was brilliant.

Ann Hood must have been having a bad year is the only excuse that comes to mind. Full of gratuitous (and utterly disgusting) sex and one of the most depressing story lines imaginable.
