Atmospheric and well written, but too many characters and too long. I literally lost the plot.

The shear range and scope of this autobiography, coupled with the articulacy and artistic abilities of the author, makes it a work of great literature. Lee's description of his family's persecution and experiences in the Nazi death camps is as moving as it is harrowing. One naturally shares his outrage at the calumny of a journalist's accusation that Rush themselves had Neo-Nazi leanings.
Generally, Lee's perceptions and sensitivities broaden the focus of the book, so that it is about much more than just a rockstar's rise to fame and fortune. He touches on issues far beyond the usual tales of rock-'n'-roll excess, treating the other band members, crew, business associates, friends, family and acquaintances with sympathy and understanding. As a bonus, he treats us to two beautiful songs at the end: demos that didn't make it onto his 'My Favourite Headache' solo album. If rejected demos from that project are that good, I can't wait to hear the finished album.

Luke Thompson does a first-rate job of reading this pacy thriller, Adam Hamdy has the enviable ability to write sustained action scenes with clarity and immediacy, so the sound effects and music are superfluous at best, and often drown out the narrative, making some of these intricate action scenes hard to follow.
Hamdy has written a very gripping story, although personally I found all the pain and suffering began to erode my enjoyment. Also, I couldn't help question how a highly trained and thoroughly equipped assassin, capable of taking out armies of similarly trained and equipped law enforcers, could so persistently fail to polish off the central character who did a bit of martial arts in his youth. Yes, I know that if you kill off the hero the story stops dead in its tracks, but the writer has to get round that with more than just a villain who can only shoot straight when not aiming at the hero.

... I might have liked this. However, what we have here is no more than a tight little thriller which passes the time. The cast seems to be hampered by a director who obviously has no sense of irony (which is not the same thing as sarcasm at all.) irony is, however, a quintessential ingredient of any of Graham Greene's work. Another important factor missing is Greene's subtle but bleek sense of humour. (It might surprise many to learn that Greene and Carol Reed regarded the film as a comedy.) What the cast of the film caught so brilliantly is lacking from this production. This is Graham Greene with all the Graham Greene left out.

Evelyn Waugh was perhaps as famous for his unpleasantness as he was for his literary prowess. Some might find this novel racist, but in fact Waugh had a jaundiced view of humanity in general, and his scorn for his fellow man is bestowed without thought of race, colour or creed.
Written early in his career, Black Mischief has a lightness of touch and the kind of grip that is sadly lacking from his later work.
Michael Maloney reads it beautifully, using an astonishing variety of voices to depict the many characters, without leaving any doubt or confusion as to who is talking. A great listen.

Greene's extraordinary adventures, the insights into his creative processes and his anecdotes of people and places make this as compelling as any work of fiction.
Jamie Parker does a fantastic job as narrator, keeping the prose vibrant and immediate.
