A detailed and informative examination of the Iraq war containing many details modern Americans should know. Performance is good, without major errors, and carries a sense of gravity that is fitting for the subject. The huge volume of dates, names, and political details make it a bit difficult to keep straight as an audio book without some accompanying notes, but very worthwhile all the same.

Well researched and informed.

I think the author could have done more to address the concerns of those who argue for regulation more targeted at protecting and alleviating real human investors who were wiped out by opaque financial vehicles that they were assured were safe.

The arguments of those more generally concerned with regulation to protect the soundness of the financial system were well addressed and thoroughly examined and rebutted, but this former class less so.

Overall very worth reading. Audio is perhaps not the best format for SOME readers due to the highly technical nature of the material that may require more intense focus, review, and analysis.

Written and performed very well with no errors, mispronunciations, or other issues. Very articulate and scholarly, though this would qualify as dry to some. Highly recommended for those interested in the topic.

This book presents a good introduction to the otherwise uninitiated willing to begin questioning the conventional historical wisdom regarding a wide variety of topics. Unfortunately it suffers from a lack of depth that I believe this author could have remedied but did not. It attacks each successive topic primarily by making generalized statements about where the typical account is wrong with sadly little specific facts to back that up even if I do not doubt most of the author’s assertions having encountered many of the same topics in other books, articles and lectures on this and similar subjects.

The narration leaves much to be desired as well, mangling words far beyond just the odd non-English name. Words that I would not have expected to be a problem such as “papacy” and “historiography” are repeatedly mispronounced.

Not a terrible listen, but the Politically Incorrect Guide to Catholicism or the several Great Courses series’ on Christianity, the Catholic Church, and the history of Christian theology would all provide more material for those interested in the same subject matter.

This title focuses on Anglicanism from the perspective of one of its more up and coming branches, the ACNA. It has a variety of topics and sections which make it helpful for those looking in from the outside that may want to know more about practice, terminology or liturgy, but is probably a bit basic for anyone with a background in the Anglican tradition that may want to dive deeper into some areas like the controversies in and around the American Episcopal church or dive deeper into Anglican theology as it relates to other larger Christian traditions.

Presentation by the author was commendable and enjoyable for his enthusiasm, knowledge and grasp of the subject as well as his lack of errors.

A worthwhile read.

A fascinating look at multiple aspects of Japanese history and culture, covering topics often overlooked by the average history channel documentary.

Performed well by a knowledgeable lecturer with good pronunciation and a clear grasp of both English and Japanese.

Best as an intro as opposed to a deep dive by more seasoned Japan watchers, but definitely worthwhile.

The content is quite good and covers an enormous range of topics, different Christian traditions and historic mail periods. The professor is very knowledgeable and fun to listen to and provides a very good balance of objective facts with just a little commentary which adds a nice context to where he is coming from intellectually.

It is a bit tough at times to hear his pronunciations though. He insists on a very Greek pronunciation of some words like hypostasis which has a widely accepted anglosized pronunciation. This would be arguably fine as it is a Greek word, but he does in no way continue that trend across all words and proceeds to just mangle other words and names such as Zurich. He somehow manages to be both inconsistent and incorrect and that was a little frustrating.

With that said, and I mean it as a comparatively minor criticism of a very worthwhile history, I still thoroughly enjoyed this listen and would recommend to anyone interested in church history.

Well written and eloquent, though the first three quarters are spent going over the history of each book of the Bible and a couple major early church controversies. Not bad things to know by any means, but if you are interested in the topic, these are things you’ll likely find in numerous other places.

It is only in the later chapters where the author takes substantial aim at the arguments against the catholic position on scripture. When he gets there, however, he does a good job citing specific historic examples and making well grounded logical arguments for his position.

Well performed with no major errors and with solid overall audio quality.

As someone with eclectic but generally libertarian political leanings, I found much (though not all) of the recommendations of this book to be well thought out and logical despite the books age.

I suppose I should not fault the author for not placing any major caveats on his policy principles given that it is a primer on libertarianism, but I do think some would be called for should many of his recommendations be implemented in todays world. He sticks to a very doctrinaire libertarian bent throughout the book which is instructive as an introduction but is not commonly adhered to, even by many of the leading libertarian thinkers today.

Performance lacks major errors but it does sound like a recording from a cautionary 1950s television ad about the evils of drugs. He pronounces words with a “wh” sound as if he was Stewie Griffin from Family Guy trying to get a rise out of Brian.

A worthwhile read, though it is showing it’s age a bit by 2022, having been written in 1997. Better as an intro for those curious about libertarianism or looking for a foundational understanding of the market oriented policy alternatives to some of the more government centric solutions to todays social ills.

The church history I was looking for

Having been interested in the topic for some time, I’ve read (and mostly listened to) many books on the topic. All seem to cover the same early controversies in detail, drop the same names, then skip ahead to about the Protestant reformation (with perhaps a brief, often topical rather than narrative segue to the crusades), do some special topics in a non-chronological format, and conclude. This series finally bridges the gap through the Middle Ages and renaissance in a coherent fashion, referencing the major names, events and struggles, and continues in a narrative fashion to the modern era.

It does have a number of non-chronological topic focused episodes and has to backtrack a few times to return to the main narrative thread but I am grateful that the professor never abandons the sequential aspect of the history entirely.

He is engaging to listen to, while he clearly does have his own take on things. He does not hide his tackling the subject of catholic history as a member of the church itself. I think he did a good job of being objective, neither polemic nor apologetic, and not shying away from controversial topics.

Overall a very worthwhile listen and I highly recommend it to those who are interested.

As someone from a very different flavor of Christian background from the authors, I have still at least found some of Hitchcock’s other material engaging and providing enough historic, theological/philosophical, and modern analytical content to be, on the whole, worthwhile. This title, however utilizes so many sweeping generalizations about topics like Islam and modern culture so as to reflect a lack of understanding of either.

Despite occasionally veering into anecdotes that reflect genuine insight and a brief couple forays into where their various ideas come from, I feel the rest of this title was meant to rile up a base, and has little new to offer.
