Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Any additional comments?
Bought this at a comment from an online friend, but wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised by the characterization and the narration. The protagonist is very personable, funny, and also admirably ingenious in his attempts to survive his next situation. The narrator did a fantastic job with conveying the protagonist's cheerful, smart-ass demeanour and relating the reactions of those watching. It did get a little too technical for me at times and I also wondered how real the science behind it was - but all in all, it was very much worth the credit I used and I'm really looking forward to a chance to see the movie.

Historia
Over a century ago Illusionist David Berkeley committed suicide in his mansion by the sea, thus dooming his restless spirit to wander forever. Or so the local legend goes. Professor Rhys Davies, a part-time parapsychologist, is writing a book on California hauntings and he believes the crumbling ruins of Berkeley House will make a terrific chapter -- if he can gain access to the house and grounds. The only obstacle is brooding cop and self-appointed caretaker, Sam Devlin.

What did you love best about A Ghost of a Chance?
I love Kevin R Free. I wish he did more Josh Lanyon books.
Would you be willing to try another book from Josh Lanyon? Why or why not?
Yes, especially if it's by Kevin R Free. Josh has a massive catalogue. While I don't always like all of his books (a bit unusual for me), the ones I connect with are lovely and on my repeat reading list.
What about Kevin R. Free’s performance did you like?
I love his voice, how pleasant it is in the ears. A lot of how I connect with the characters is through the narrator and Kevin makes it easy to like the characters.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
No idea.
Any additional comments?
The book could have been longer. In all honesty, Sam Devlin was an asshole and treated Rhys like shit, both before and after sex. I felt like Rhys left him off the hook too easily. There needed to be more angry sex, especially considering some of Sam's comments. So the book felt like it was rushed and the sexual tension not milked as much as it could have been.
The mystery of the house also felt too pat. It's similar to others, so similar that once a few things were revealed I already knew how it was going to go, so I wasn't even reading it for the mystery but because I liked Rhys and his pov.

Historia
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

Unexpected
Revisado: 06-17-15
What did you love best about The Keeper of Lost Causes?
I love the narration and the characters. All of the characters, the main and the supporting, are so well-rounded and so 3-D that it's quite easy to picture them as real people.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. Although there's a fairly easy logical deduction to make as to how the mystery went, there's definitely a few plot twists that took me by surprise and were not quite what I expected.
Which character – as performed by Erik Davies – was your favorite?
I really like the Homicide Chief and Assad. The homicide chief's patience with Carl and politicking with maintaining the office is both hilarious and oddly sweet. He could have easily been a character to hate but the clear motivation to do the right thing makes him a more interesting character. Assad is a bundle of surprises - he's my favourite kind of character - smart, witty, and a dark horse.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not particularly.
Any additional comments?
this is not a book for the weak of stomach. There is definitely torture in this book, physical, mental, and emotional. It's graphic enough that if you try to picture it in your head, you could probably puke, but Jussi's writing and the translation are extremely well-done. Those scenes flash by like vivid surreal photos and it's up to the reader to choose to look further into them or not. Everything is so fast-paced and so page turning that I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
