Good content, bad reader
Revisado: 04-10-23
Good content and interesting topic, but very painful to listen to; slow, too many pauses and dead time every few words... I usually listen at 1.1x or 1.2x speed, for this one I had to go to 1.3x and even tried 1.4x.
Deninitely needs a good edit and some silence trimming

A useful survey, just what I wanted

Very good but one word: "peninchula"?
Revisado: 11-28-22
Better than i expected, I like how the book captures not only the historical context but also describes well how that history shaped Italian society, behaviors and expressions you can see and ear very clearly today.
He also pronounces Italian names reasonable well, better than many English speakers I heard. Just one word though: "peninchula"? I admit English is not my first language (Italian is) but that's not how I heard it pronounced by other English speakers. If that was an attempt at the Italian pronunciation, it didn't go well :-)
That also a word he repeats constantly, almost in every other sentence; the first time was I heard it was odd, the second time perplexing and then just annoying, almost like a stab in my ear.
Anyway, I'm being picky: I really enjoyed the book and I recommend it if you want to understand some of the reasons why Italy and Italians are how they are today

Terrible Italian pronunciation
Revisado: 11-17-22
The book and history narrated are fine, expresses balanced points of view and paint a clear picture of the Medici history. But as a native Italian speaker, the pronunciation of Italian names and words (there are a good number of them) makes me cringe. I am not saying he needs to speak perfect Italian, but if he is an expert in the Medici family and Italian "Rinascimento" one would expect him to at least try to learn a passable pronunciation.

Boring, hard to listen to

Interesting story, terrible narrator. This is a book to read rather than listen to, hard to follow and keep concentration with the monotone voice and frequent pauses between sentences

Quinto, good actor but not for audiobooks
Revisado: 09-30-20
This is a good sequel, I like the story and how it is developed. I did not particularly like the reader: Zachary Quinto is a dog actor, I enjoyed his movies but audiobooks are different, he has a nice deep voice but very monotone, he hardly differentiate characters and often does not use pauses and silence for dramatic effect, he flies over sentences and paragraphs that should not be meshed together.
I would like to hear this series read by some else (or I may just buy the books instead)

Terrible narration
Revisado: 01-29-19
The story might be goo but I can't really tell because it's ruined but a terrible narration. Every word has the finality and gravity of a death sentence, pauses every 3-4 words completely out of context, too slow pace (but trying to Speed narration up to 1.25x jumbled the words together and make trying to follow the story even harder)...
I'll give the ebook a shot instead, it may be good (but I can't know just yet)

Promising
Revisado: 01-08-19
The story seems promising but you have to wait till the last quarter of the book for something really exiting to happen. It's clearly meant to hook you and read the next book, I just hope the story will really take off.
The narration is fair but while Perkins tries to use different voices for the characters, you can barely tell them apart and dialogs are sometimes confusing unless you really pay close attention

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Interesting, great narrator
Revisado: 12-19-18
I've not been fully captures by the story though, even if there are some interesting ideas and a new take on magic and science fiction. It feels like a crossover between The Man in the High Castle (alternative realities where historical facts have gone differently) and a take on magic and "Actives".
I may give the second book a chance to see if it improves the story

Was really hard
Revisado: 12-03-18
The book contains some interesting leadership concepts, if you can get past all the religious references. For me it took a lot of effort. Ultimately I'm not sure it was worth the effort, I didn't find anything really new I had not already read somewhere else, except I felt like I was back to catechism for half the book
