Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Historia
On January 6, 2021, insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol, an act of domestic terror without parallel in American history, designed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. In a resolution six months later, the House of Representatives called it "one of the darkest days of our democracy," and established a special committee to investigate how and why the attack happened. Celadon Books, in collaboration with The New Yorker, presents the committee's final report, the definitive account of January 6th and what led up to it.

Every voter and I do mean EVERY voter needs to hear the facts this committee has uncovered. Our country needs each and every one of us to educate ourselves. Our system of government and our very way of life is at stake. Please, for your children and grandchildren, listen to the facts.

The “five star” rating system is simply inadequate to rate this experience. I’ve been reading biographies my entire life and I have never been more enthralled. What a talent!

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

There is such a thing as innocent ignorance and I fully admit to it. That I have lived 67 years on this earth, ignorant of 95% of black American history, makes me ashamed. But no more. I vow to spend the rest of my life educating myself and doing what I can to educate my fellow white Americans. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the unvarnished history of our country. Knowledge is indeed power and it will be through each and everyone of us educating ourselves that we may, at last, live up to our dreams of being a truly exceptional country.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

Revisado: 05-03-21
If only I could wave a magic wand and impart the knowledge and the wisdom that is in this book into the minds everyone in America. Since the death of George Floyd, I’ve read many, many books concerning America’s racist history, the current state of affairs in the country regarding race and more importantly where we might be able to go from here - none has been more important to my 66 year old white brain than this one.

Historia
Professor Louis Moore’s audiobook about the history of African Americans in sports in the United States educates listeners about the fascinating social and cultural history of the nation. For example, integration of major league and professional sports broke a major color barrier for one of the first times in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. African American athletes competed in America long before the 20th century - in fact, they even competed during the years of slavery.

Thanks, from a 66 year old white woman
Revisado: 09-03-20
As the title says, I’m a 66 year old white woman. I might add that I have no interest in sports. I listened to this lecture series because it has become painfully obvious to me that I am completely uneducated about the depth and breadth of the struggle for equality that African Americans have faced throughout our history. I have always been ally of people seeking equal rights and equal value in our society. Because of this series, I pledge to be an educated ally as well. I encourage everyone to listen to this series and join me.

In the midst of the pandemic
Revisado: 03-18-20
I just finished this book. Today is Wednesday, March 18, 2020. America has just begun to realize the gravity of a pandemic. Everyone and I do mean everyone should read this book NOW. This might very well be the best possible time to read it. Why? Because it will remind you what leadership looks like. It will remind you what honesty in government looks like. It will remind you what empathy for other people looks like. It will remind you what being the best American you can be looks like. And it will remind you that we must do everything in our power to recapture those qualities that have been absent in our American experience since 2016. Thank you, Mrs. Obama from the bottom of my 65 year old heart for documenting you and your family’s journey. It brought tears to my eyes but also joy to my heart.
