Enjoyable Short Stories!
Revisado: 11-16-24
I enjoyed all of the short stories in this collection, but I think the one I enjoyed the most was the one about Nash and Libby. I hope we get more of their story in the future because they are a great couple!

Decent Sequel
Revisado: 10-19-24
This was a decent sequel to carry on the storyline, I think it was a lot wordier than it needed to be though, and those words didn't offer much value to me. It was even harder to follow than Son of a Witch.

Historia
Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Much Loved Musical - Kind of Like the Book Too!
Revisado: 10-05-24
Where to begin..? I love the musical, and I am hesitant to watch the movie when it comes out because of how much I love the musical. So, I thought I should go back to the book that the musical is supposed to be based on. I say "supposed to be based on" because I did not find a lot of similarity between the book and musical - much to my surprise. Elphaba was portrayed as more sympathetic for much of the book. I was surprised at how minimal Glinda's role in the book was. The character of Madame Morrible is much more important in the book than in the musical. I hope that the move adaptation incorporates a little more from the book. I was very good.

Historia
"I was one of 28 children born to my dad and his three wives. Indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that I resided among the righteous, I was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the Prophet. I would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. But my innocence didn't last long." Flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been rescuing women and children from the FLDS.

Interesting
Revisado: 10-05-24
I tend to read a lot of true-crime and cult-related books. This one was in both genres. It may be hard to listen to if you are not aware of how a lot of these families with plural wives are raised, but it is definitely child abuse in many cases. It was a good book.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Very Interesting
Revisado: 09-29-24
I selected this book expecting something completely different. I thought it would be a book focused on how the author had great higher educational achievements BECAUSE of homeschooling. That is not what the book was about. Instead, the author's accomplishments were despite limited early education.
I am a huge fan of homeschooling if it works for your family. I was homeschooled prior to sixth grade, and I homeschooled my children for their elementary years as well. Homeschooling is a personal choice for some and a religious choice for others. I see no problems with homeschooling as long as the children are receiving a basic education.
This book touched on many other points that hit home for me besides homeschooling: there was abuse in the home, there were extremist beliefs, and the author's parents seemed to choose when to be supportive and loving. The author has overcome a lot to achieve her education and to live the life she choses. I was very moved by this book.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 09-29-24
The story was interesting. I was a child during this timeframe, so I was only vaguely aware of the original capsule tampering case growing up and less so about this one. I find myself on the fence regarding whether the daughter assisted the mother. Their relationship was very complicated, so anything is possible.
Regarding the performance, the voices the narrator used did not really help it. They detracted from it. There was not enough difference in the voices to make it easy to track who was supposed to be speaking. It would have been better to have just read the book. That is just my opinion.

Revisado: 09-14-24
In Book # 8 of the Ministry of Curiosities series, we continue to see the royal family featured, but we also have a new group in the form of shape-shifters. Murder, a love triangle, more mysteries, and the characters we love drive a great story in this book. I loved this book!
