Disappointing

I really enjoyed the previous books in the series and expected much the same. Difficult to explain why such a decline in quality, it seem like it was written by someone else. Poor narration too.

Historia
Trauma victims are not new to medical examiner Faith McIntyre, but this one is different. The unconscious woman clinging to life after a hit and run is FBI agent Macy Crow. What the woman from Quantico was doing in a dark alley after midnight is just one mystery. The other is more unsettling: Macy is Faith’s mirror image—the twin sister she never knew she had.

OK but no cigar

Got it for free and this is why I manage to finish it over few weeks. Story is OK but I couldn't stand the strident monotone of the reader for more than 20 minutes at a time. I see many good reviews of the above and the only explanation I have is that the others never got to experience a really good reader.
Would not waste a credit on this one.

Chick lit in disguise
Revisado: 10-27-17
And quite a poor one at that. The story plot is ridiculous and full of cliches with characters picket of the shelfs of characters supermarket. Same goes for infantile dialogs.
If all this is not bad enough there comes the narator that does her best to destroy whatever questionable quality still remains.

And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

Belongs to the garbage heap
Revisado: 09-26-17
Seemed OK in the first few pages. Then something went wrong, my frustration was reaching very high levels and it took me a while to understand why. It is just that this book consists of thousands of consecutive sentences each one beginning with the word 'She'.
"She chose.... She contemplated...She felt....She left, She had...." and so on with no end.
Pure torture. Of course it gets returned.

Awful
Revisado: 02-07-17
I did try hard but couldn’t take it for longer than 10 minute. Listening to the narrator is pure torture.
The only good thing I could say about this book is consistency, appalling story combined with terrible narration.
I may try to read the electronic version when I have difficulties falling asleep.
How did it get so many positive reviews is a mystery that will remain unresolved.

When Mark Hartmann is asked to perform a post-mortem on a lab assistant killed by cancer, everything looks straightforward. But his initial findings are surprising: Millicent Sweet appears to have died of several different, aggressive tumours. Before he can discuss this with colleagues, he's called to a conference in Scotland. A serious error of judgement gives a pharmaceutical company a handle on him, and they threaten to expose his excesses unless he falsifies his report on Sweet.

Excellent
Revisado: 08-26-16
Like for most readers, separating between quality and rejects is always a problem. Sean Barrett is a master story teller and I check out all his narrations since it makes sense that a great performer will resist association with poor quality work. So far this logic proved correct and same goes for this book.
After reading and very much enjoying the first book in the series (A feast of Carrion), I was a bit discouraged by some reviews that present this book as inferior to the first.
I decided to take the chance and I am pleased I did.
I do find this book just as good and even better than the first, a perfect combination of a good story, great writing and amazing narration.

Almost OK but ruined by the narator
Revisado: 08-22-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Hard to say, even the lowest quality works may have fans.
What could Robert Bryndza have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The story is very thin with flat two dimensional characters. Too many irrelevant dialogs and pages filled with descriptions of weather and scenery. An informant woman phones the police and takes extreme safety precautions in organizing the meeting, commits pre planned suicide immediately after talking to the police by hanging herself of a tree in the woods. All this in the five minutes or so she excused herself for a nature call...quite ridiculous really.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator delivers one of the worst if not the worst performance I have experienced in the hundred and fifty books I have listened to so far. It actually resembles text read by a computer program since there is a complete separation between the tone, volume or emphasis and the context of the text being read. Every single sentence start with high volume, emphasis and dramatization then ends in a quiet subdued tone even when the context is a fairly banal description of the weather, room temperature or item of clothing.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not for me, but some readers may have find it OK and give three stars, all this if read by a half decent narator
Any additional comments?
It is possible I am extra hard on this book but then I have been spoiled for many police mystery books after reading authors such as Jo Nesbo and Jossi Adler Olsen, and listening to master narrators such as Sean Barrett and others.

Disappointed
Revisado: 07-25-16
What disappointed you about The Boy in the Suitcase?
Dealing with the story characters the authors have selected quantity over quality. During the first chapters, there are so many new characters that an average reader may need to pencil down a list of names.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I do really enjoy scandinavian authors like Joe Nesbo and Jossie Adler Olsen. Was hoping this book will have some if not all these qualities but was disappointed.
Would you be willing to try another one of Katherine Kellgren’s performances?
No never. Extremely poor performance especially due to indiscriminate use of dramatization and tone of voice. The end result is so strident that the experience borders with physical discomfort.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Boy in the Suitcase?
The overall quality is to poor to be helped by editing.

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

Garbage quality
Revisado: 06-11-16
This is another good example on haw misleading the rating system can be. Obviously even the lowest quality literature has its fans.
There is no story, no characters just an interminable sequence of blubbering.
Felt a bit sorry for the reader who tried her best but no one can create content where there isn't any.

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.
