Good but needs to be edited for length

Parts of this book were very good, mostly the police procedural parts. Nevertheless, at nearly 30 hours, it was at least 10 hours too long. I feel as though the author was too ambitious in trying to tie together too many different story lines, some of which (the voodoo parts) I was not very interested in. Another problem for me was that I didn’t find the main character, Cardo, very likeable or believable.
Despite these complaints, there were definitely some interesting parts of the story and I am happy that I listened to it.

Great story and great narration by Raul Arrieta. I hope Audible soon releases more of the Phillip Marlowe series in Spanish!

This series continues to get better and better!

I have listened to and/or read all of the books in the Bevilacqua- Chamorro series and this is one of the best. I like how in this and also in “el mal de corcira” we learn more about Vila’s past through the interspersing of his memories with the present case he is working on. You won’t go wrong with any of the books in the series and if you are just discovering Vila and Chamorro, you should probably start at the beginning of the series, but I still can’t help thinking that this is one of my favorites.

The narration could have been better!

As in all the Bosch novels, this is a great story. However, I think the listening experience could have been better. From my point of view there were 2 problems with the narration.
1. The narration is very staccato and there is no differentiation between speakers. The narrator doesn’t attempt to give different voices to different characters in the story.
2. In addition, there is no pause between different scenes or chapters. I, at times, was momentarily confused as to what had happened because the sound engineer didn’t pause at all before continuing the storyline in a different place or time. Not a big problem, but disconcerting.
Despite these problems, it was well worthwhile to listen to, but I feel as if it could have been done better.

I am not sure why, but the 5 or 6 Bosch titles in Spanish all have or have had 2 versions. Why not instead produce some more new Bosch titles in Spanish. I am hoping, although not hopeful, that this will happen soon.
More Bosch in Spanish, please!!!

Great story with lots of humor. Johan Gamarra is a fabulous narrator! He makes the characters come alive.

A different kind of police procedural

This book is well written and Eugenio Barona is an excellent narrator. However, I was disappointed with how little of the book was actually about the kidnapping case. It’s a long listen, over 20 hours, and yet only about 4-5 hours, at most, dealt directly with the kidnapping. Most of the remaining 15 hours concerned interdepartmental machinations within the police department, the importance of which was hard to understand for a westerner, at least this westerner. Another problem for me was keeping the names of the characters straight. They all seemed similar to my ear especially with so many beginning with the letter M. That said, it was not a waste of time. I enjoyed the book, but wish it had focused more on the kidnapping.
