A series of threads pulled tight

A very interesting book indeed.
It jerks you around various viewpoints, often seemingly unrelated with unclear chronology, setting up threads that finally start to pull together in the back third or so.
It comes out swinging with an interesting and strange world. Not bizarre, but it’s got that striking imagery and mysterious history we love. But I’ll be honest, it’s slow. It takes its time setting up pieces and displaying its characters somewhat exhaustively. It almost lost me in the middle, but once the pieces started to fall into place it really had me smiling.
I also like the writing style. I’m usually not one to comment on that aspect, but I like the voice and the way it’s not afraid to give you little hints about how some things will go, making an open yet vague secret out of certain futures.

This fine cast of characters finally reaches the end if their tale. This was without doubt the best of the three, with an interesting plot structure giving as many surprises as you expected outcomes. The author does a good job killing enough characters to keep you wondering without feeling like wanton death just to get to you.
Lori Prince is a good reader, though throughout the series were moments of a delivery that seemed out of touch with the moment, or the overall flow of a sentence was awkward, usually at the stitch of the editing. However I don’t necessarily blame Lori for this as it could well be fault of the director or editor.

What an experience Era 2 has been. Possibly my favorite set of characters Brandon has done, Era 2 feels a little like Brandon’s world written in a story more akin to one of Jim Butcher (Wax feels like an alternate reality Harry Dresden, what can I say). The Lost Metal gives the series a worthy send off, full of great character development, awesome moments and big cosmere reveals. I do think it remains outshined by its predecessor The Bands of Mourning, which was such a phenomenally well structured adventure. Nevertheless I was not disappointed by The Lost Metal as a follow up, and I’ll certainly listen to this series again in the future.
