Historia
The alien race known as the Ancients vanished before Earth's last ice age - but not before building interconnected rings that form a highway system across the galaxy. Humanity has used these rings for years but has never figured out how to build its own, or even how to alter the connection pattern. Now, the Imperial starship Pandora is on a mission to discover and explore new interstellar connection points. While on Venus, an unexpected guest arrives - Marvin, a rogue robot who puts his strange mind to work on reconnecting the rings into a new pattern. Everything goes haywire.

Hate the "Radio show" performance!
Revisado: 03-12-19
I don't know who decided to try and mimic the radio show performance vibe, but I hated it. It was so distracting with the sound effects and everything else that instead of immersing me it did the exact opposite. At least half the appeal of a book is the image and feeling I generate in my own head. These intrusive extra effects take me right out of it. An author using different voices is fine as it helps separate the characters, but all the extra sound effects and ensemble cast turned a good adventure book into a cheaply produced radio show soap opera.
I loved the Star Force series, but I had to return the book after the first couple of chapters because it was so distracting that it was annoying.

A decent follow on to The Ember Wars, but short.
Revisado: 11-29-17
I think Book1 and 2 should've been combined into a single novel. A 6 hour listen time is pretty short compared to a lot of other novels. Otherwise, decent story and good follow-on to Ember Wars.

Historia
The First Interstellar War is over, but the Royal Navy still has plenty of work to do. As Earth struggles to recover from the bombardment, Captain John Naiser is placed in command of HMS Warspite - an experimental heavy cruiser - and ordered to escort a squadron of colony ships to a star system of immense strategic importance. But as the crew struggle to survive hundreds of light years from Earth, they find themselves dealing with the legacy of the war.

Agonizingly slow paced.
Revisado: 07-27-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
More action. Chapters of the misery on Earth, followed by chapter upon chapter of the misery on the colony etc.
What was most disappointing about Christopher G. Nuttall’s story?
I'm slogging through the book rather than enjoying it. Compared to the first 3 books this one is just godawfully boring. You introduced a brand new space ship but so far all we've learned about it is it broke down the first two times they used it.
Have you listened to any of Ralph Lister’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Narration was fine.
Could you see Warspite being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
God no. Paint drying would be a more interesting plot.

Historia
At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

Greay book. Lousy Narration
Revisado: 01-20-15
Any additional comments?
The narrator seemed to be reading the words for the first time. Pace, emphasis, timing etc were all off. It was like listening to William Shatner trying to read to you, but with more over-acting, overly dramatic pauses in the oddest of places, and emphasis on words that were just strange to emphasize.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Well performed. Fairly simple story.
Revisado: 12-22-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
As brain candy to pass the time, yes. Of course, that is why I bought it so it was fine for that.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Meh. It was OK. The last chapters about the return to earth seemed a bit contrived. Almost like the author was just trying to finish the book and rushed the job.
Which scene was your favorite?
The battle scenes were well performed.
Do you think Steel World needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Well, it has two more so yes.
Any additional comments?
While I get that the main character was no rocket scientist there were long parts of the book where it took overly long. To illustrate, the way the book revealed things it was like the author brought out an 8 foot clown with a sign that said "I am a clue" and beat the main character about the head with the clue sign while screaming "I'm a clue!". 5 chapters later the character would say, "This might be a clue".

Good book. Bad narration
Revisado: 11-13-13
Would you listen to Thuvia, Maid of Mars again? Why?
Yes, but not from this narrator. The reading wasn't like listening to someone reading the story. It was like hearing someone who recorded a series of disjointed sentences and then pasted them together so it came across with a lot of unnatural pauses that frankly got to be too unbearable to tolerate.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I couldn't.

Good action, overly simplistic
Revisado: 08-07-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The concept of the complete ineptitude of all officers, yet all enlisted are geniuses in waiting and the world would better if only they were in charge just got old. The situation is true and does happen, but the blanket, overall assumption and presentation that it was a constant in the universe just made it hard to suspend belief enough to enjoy the story.
Had the issue been a small collection of ignorant officers (and with the remoteness of the moonbase it could have been pulled off) it would have been more believable, but by making it sound as if the entire military organization was that bad all the time it just came across as unrealistic.....and this is from someone who loves SciFi and Fantasy.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jack Campbell again?
Yes, I still love the action scenes even if the overarching story is not plausible.
What about Eric Summerer’s performance did you like?
Loved it.
Do you think Stark's War needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
If the overall theme is the same by the third book it will just be too boring.
