Great Story about a forgotten history
Revisado: 08-27-22
There are very few fiction works about the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) and I'm glad this one was written. Great story, satisfying "world building" (actually existed of course), and well read for listening. Highly recommend

Historia
What happens when authorities you venerate condone something you know is wrong? What does this mean about what you’ve been venerating? No issue brings this question into starker contrast than slavery. Every major religion and philosophy condoned or approved of it, but in modern times there is nothing seen as more evil. Americans confront this crisis of authority when they erect statues of Founding Fathers who slept with their slaves. And Muslims faced it when ISIS revived sex slavery, justifying it with verses from the Quran and the practice of Muhammad.

An interesting take on a difficult subject
Revisado: 05-26-21
Let me premise my following criticisms with this statement. I applaud anyone who is willing to take on such a difficult and sensitive topic. I think more intellectual discussions on such tense subjects are needed. I found the issue of slavery on the viewpoint of a Muslim also interesting and recommend it for anyone curious about thr subject. However, I do have two major issues with the narrative. Firstly, the author approaches Islam's relationship with slavery based on the sayings and actions of Islam's great and minor prophets and intellectuals. This would be the equivalent of saying that since Christ never condoned or took slaves of his own, then Christians have been opposed to slavery, an absurd notion. For instance, the author fails to find an actual reason why slaves in Islam rarely had offspring of their own, when the Western slaves typically did and slave deprived communities span across the colonial lands when the middle and near east are mostly devoid of them. He ignores such realities such as mass castration among males and forced infanticide among female slaves due to the fact that castration was nominally illegal and forced relations despised by Islamic teaching. This is done to present Islamic slavery as being more tame than its Western counterpart. Secondly, and the most important issue, is that the author, by his own admission, is incapable of criticizing Mohammed or other prophets due to his faith. No matter how heinous the action of taking slaves or , at best, coerced concubinage is, these action are automatically just and right in the eyes of the author. This severely restricts the objective approach of any discussion about Islam and slavery and represents another barrier in the intellectual discussion of such topics.

Historia
In the aftermath of World War II, Prussia - a centuries-old state pivotal to Europe's development - ceased to exist. In their eagerness to erase all traces of the Third Reich from the earth, the Allies believed that Prussia, the very embodiment of German militarism, had to be abolished. But as Christopher Clark reveals in this pioneering history, Prussia's legacy is far more complex.

A comprehensive and detailed history of Prussia
Revisado: 05-16-21
There are very few historical books that manage to combine a comprehensive history of a culture and state as well as this book does with Prussia. There is a concerted effort to describe not only the ruling members of the government, but also the culture of the people. I highly recommend this book if you want learn more about Prussia. Be aware that most of the information comes before 1918, so don't expect much after that time period. The narration takes some getting use to but it doesn't detract overall.

Historia
Acclaimed biographer Susan Ronald delivers a stunning account of Elizabeth I that focuses on her role in the Wars of Religion - the battle between Protestantism and Catholicism that tore Europe apart in the sixteenth century. Elizabeth’s 1558 coronation procession was met with an extravagant outpouring of love. Only 25 years old, the young queen saw herself as the nation’s Protestant savior, aiming to provide new hope, prosperity, and independence from the foreign influence that had plagued her sister Mary’s reign. Given the scars of the Reformation, Elizabeth would need all of the powers of diplomacy and tact she could summon.

World War II began with a metallic roar as the German Blitzkrieg raced across Europe, spearheaded by the most dreaded weapon of the 20th century: the Panzer. No German tank better represents that thundering power than the infamous Tiger, and Otto Carius was one of the most successful commanders to ever take a Tiger into battle, destroying well over 150 enemy tanks during his incredible career.

An interesting if not also an opinionated story
Revisado: 05-29-19
A pretty interesting story if one wants to know about the daily life and personal accounts of a Tiger I tank commander. However, there isn't much detail in combat recounts and fairly little regarding tank comparisons or details. There are of course personal opinions about the war and those participating in it, but nothing anti-semitic or holocaust denial is presented. The few issues some other reviewers have are probably in reference to the author's disdain on how German soldiers were/are treated and represented by western culture. I was not alive then, let alone actually there, so I'll reserve any judgment on that part.
