Historia
Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then a deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider, she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth.

Those screeching kids!
Revisado: 02-13-25
I am still listening, but though the story is ok so far, the reader should not do the two kids; a hormonal, bratty, screeching 12 yo girl and a 4 yo that the mom still carries around. 4 year olds can easily walk. I am a loving mom and grandmother but I want to slap the 12 yo and ground her for life. The 4 yo i want to make walk on her own capable legs. Oh, the husband needs a good slap, too.
Maybe this book just isn't for me?
BTW, I always read the reviews and I must say I was warned about the sound of the girls.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Why did it take me so long?
Revisado: 03-06-24
How could a novel about an octopus be compelling? Well, 35k readers must know something.
And now I do, too.
It was simply wonderful.

Historia
Jeanette Winterson’s bold and revelatory novels have established her as a major figure in world literature. This memoir is the chronicle of a life’s work to find happiness. It is a book full of stories: about a girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night; about a religious zealot disguised as a mother who has two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the dresser drawer; about growing up in a north England industrial town in the 1960s and 1970s; and about the universe as a cosmic dustbin.

Honest, beautifully written and terribly sad
Revisado: 07-01-18
I have never written a full review, despite being an Audible junkie for 15+ years. This book resonated with me because my daughter was adopted. Jeannette’s experience cannot possibly reflect the experience of the majority of adoptions, though she makes declarations as if to speak for all adopted children. Her experience was heartbreaking, her adoptive mother depressed, abusive & cruel. She was, no doubt, suffering from her own demons and her little helpless daughter suffered because of it. I wanted to hold her and tell her it didn’t have to be that way. The day my daughter was placed in my arms (at 6 hours old), my life became complete. The question that had plagued me for years, “Is this all there is to my life?” was answered in an instant. No birth mother’s love could be deeper than the love I feel for my (now adult) child.
The book is a gut-wrenching, honest portrayal of a neglected, unloved (by her adoptive mother) child who, despite her circumstances grew to be a strong, accomplished woman.
How terribly sad for her that so many years of her life, she felt unloved & unworthy.

You won't want to turn it off.
Revisado: 02-20-17
I have read a number of books about, and by, survivors. This is the first by a member of the resistance. Just an "ordinary" young woman accomplishing extraordinary feats of heroism and bravery. Each of us may wonder, "what would I do?" under life threatening circumstances. This book isn't about what extraordinary lengths we might go to preserve our own lives or even those of our families. The fact that it was done for strangers is what truly makes her story indelible; indelible and inspiring. I am now off to find another story, hopefully equal to this one, which I will never forget.

Don't bother
Revisado: 05-29-08
One of the worst books I've ever read. I'm embarrassed that I bothered to finish it but I'm hooked on audiobooks and didn't have another one to begin.
