Super Fun Murder Mystery!
Revisado: 12-04-24
I always welcome a good murder mystery. You throw in magic and a ghost and it's even better! Darcy reminds me of Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote. If Jessica Fletcher had magical powers and worked at a pot dispensary. It's a lot of fun. Adding to it all is the narration by Bonniejean Boettcher, which is great. She really captures the fun tone of S.E. Biglow's writing. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Historia
Like any adventurous 12-year-old, all Ella really wants to do is find aliens, get a pet dragon, and maybe explore the galaxy. But her little brother, Leo, keeps ruining everything! After Leo ruins her science fair project, Ella doesn't think things can get any worse. That is, until Ella is kidnapped by aliens, leaving it up to Leo to rescue his sister and save the planet from an alien invasion. It's a lot to ask of a five-year-old. But Leo is no ordinary five-year-old.

Leo Ruins Everything . . . Except this book
Revisado: 09-27-24
As an adult, I had a really fun time reading this. I've read all three in the series so far and this one's my favorite. I'm a sucker for space aliens and this book scratched that itch. There were surprisingly high stakes in this story that I did not expect from a book written for a younger audience, which is always welcome. The audio performance was spot on, I particularly liked the pronunciations of the space alien names and the voice Leo (all of them!). Recommended.

Historia
Living in a nursing home is all eleven-year-old Bird knows. Her grandmother turned their large Victorian house into a small, offbeat home for the elderly where the eccentric residents become Bird’s lovable and unique family. But after two of the residents pass away, Bird’s feelings of loss for her mother are reawakened. She seeks solace with Mr. Briggs, the last remaining resident, and with Pearl, an elephant Bird meets at a traveling carnival.

Says a lot in a short amount of time
Revisado: 08-28-24
I feel like this book is longer than its 4 hours. In a good way! There's a lot of emotion, whether it's hints of sadness or a nice big handful of hope, that the author manages to fit into the story. You really feel for Bird and the inhabitants of the nursing home. And not to mention Pearl the Elephant, whose story rivals Bird's. For fiction, the idea of a child growing up in a nursing home, witnessing first hand the effects of old age, is a such great concept. I really liked how Bird and Pearl's narratives intertwined with each other. The story's helped along by the great narration. The narrator gives Bird and Pearl their own distinct personalities, which is impressive considering one of them is an elephant. A great story for young and not-so-young.

Great Fun for All!
Revisado: 09-06-22
“Thelma Bee in Toil and Treble” is ostensibly a children's/young adult book, but as a 45 year old, I loved it. I believe that says more about the book then it does me, as it's a super fun read from beginning to end. There's a great interplay between science and the supernatural, with the character of Thelma Bee at the center encompassing both sides. All of the characters in the book have a unique personality and each of them have their own role in the larger plot, something not all writers can pull off and Petti does a wonderful job here.
With an audiobook, of course, a good book needs a good narrator and Thelma Bee has a great narrator.
It doesn't take long to fall within the spell of Thelma Bee's world thanks to Bonniejean Boettcher's narration. Boettcher handles a large cast of characters deftly, with each character popping from the page thanks to Petti's writing and Boettcher's ability to give each character their own distinct, fun voice. It's a great performance all around.
I have enjoyed both books in the series so far and I'm excited to see where else Thelma Bee will go!
