Historia
Since his wife, Michelle, left seven years ago, Jeffy Coltrane has worked to maintain a normal life for himself and his 11-year-old daughter, Amity, in Suavidad Beach. It’s a quiet life, until a local eccentric known as Spooky Ed shows up on their doorstep. Ed entrusts Jeffy with hiding a strange and dangerous object - something he calls “the key to everything” - and tells Jeffy that he must never use the device. But after a visit from a group of ominous men, Jeffy and Amity find themselves accidentally activating the key and discovering an extraordinary truth.

Yet another Multiverse story
Revisado: 01-12-24
Fictional stories about the multiverse have become rather formulaic. Someone stumbles into the multiverse, stumbles around, realizes they're in trouble and then scrambles to find their way back to their original starting point. This is the same kind of story but with different names and slightly different changes in the plot. In my judgment it's just not very original.
The use of two narrators, one an adult male and two a preteen female is distracting and not very helpful to the performance. All things considered. I was rather disappointed in this story.

Historia
In this groundbreaking look at the Cuban Missile Crisis, Martin Sherwin not only gives us a riveting sometimes hour-by-hour explanation of the crisis itself, but also explores the origins, scope, and consequences of the evolving place of nuclear weapons in the post-World War II world. Mining new sources and materials, and going far beyond the scope of earlier works on this critical face-off between the United States and the Soviet Union — triggered when Khrushchev began installing missiles in Cuba at Castro's behest....

Important History
Revisado: 06-12-21
The story is well told and heavily documented. The writing and performance generate considerable stress in the hearer which was likely at much higher levels in the historic characters.
I was shocked at the cavalier approach to nuclear war manifested by both military and civilian leadership. Politically I'm too the right of Atila the Hun but I have to give credit to JFK to keeping us out of war.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

A Rushed Ending
Revisado: 07-14-20
I know this introduces a series, but the ending of the book caught me by surprise. Not because the ending was odd or contained a neat twist, but because it was so abrupt. It was as if the writer saw her page count was getting high and just shut it down.Really unsatisfying.
The rest of the book was creative and interesting and the narration was quite good.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

An eye opener!
Revisado: 01-11-20
I am rarely surprised by a book and even less often changed by it. This was the exception. Farrow lays out a well documented case against Harvey Weinstein and, to a lesser degree, Matt Lauer. The more stunning revelation is the extent to which a major news organization (NBC) would go to cover up for both Weinstein and Lauer. These horrors really do happen and now we are warned.

Historia
When Pentagon bioterror operative Roberto Diaz was sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack, he found something far worse: a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction. He contained it and buried it in cold storage deep beneath a little-used military repository. Now, after decades of festering in a forgotten sub-basement, the specimen has found its way out and is on a lethal feeding frenzy. Only Diaz knows how to stop it.

Over the top...in a bad way
Revisado: 09-27-19
I love books in this genre but Koepp must it for me. First, his character development is extreme and unnecessary. Development is vital in any good work but it must not become the story. He told us innumerable facts about his people that just did not add to the story. It was distracting and even boring for me. I bought the book for the story, not for character development. Second, Koepp uses profanity to the point that it becomes distracting. I have worked in many jobs, both blue and white-collar, and I have never heard this level of profanity. The story would not suffer from a cleaner, less course text. It may not be important to you but it was a negative for me.

An outstanding history of a dark era in our days. It is quite technical in places but not overly so. It should be careful read and digested.

Many good nuggets
Revisado: 04-16-18
There are numerous nuggets that are worth listening for. Douglas was there when the unit began and he saw it grow and develop. You will hear details of some of the lesser known serial murderers along with the more notorious.
If there is anything negative, it was that the author, Douglas, thinks awfully highly of himself. He never misses a chance to toot his own horn. If you can live with that, you'll enjoy the book.

Historia
The international monetary system has collapsed three times in the past hundred years, in 1914, 1939, and 1971. Each collapse was followed by a period of tumult: War, civil unrest, or significant damage to the stability of the global economy. Now James Rickards, the acclaimed author of Currency Wars, shows why another collapse is rapidly approaching - and why this time, nothing less than the institution of money itself is at risk.
