Historia
Faust is one of the pillars of Western literature. This classic drama presents the story of the scholar Faust, tempted into a contract with the Devil in return for a life of sensuality and power. Enjoyment rules, until Faust’s emotions are stirred by a meeting with Gretchen, and the tragic outcome brings Part 1 to an end. Part 2, written much later in Goethe’s life, places his eponymous hero in a variety of unexpected circumstances, causing him to reflect on humanity and its attitudes to life and death.

Lots of Fun to Hear Faust

Of course the story is the best. The actors who play the parts are wonderful and really bring the story to life. I loved this.

Historia
A prolific journalist, Martin Walker has crafted a mystery series that deftly blends the stylings of Peter Mayle and Alexander McCall Smith. Chief Bruno Courreges loves life in his small French village. One day his idyll is disturbed when a local research station for genetically modified crops is burned down. An enclave of environmentalists seems to be the most likely culprit, but soon Bruno uncovers evidence that makes the case infinitely more complicated.

Brava St Denis and Bruno
Revisado: 02-18-25
A lovely escape to St Denis, France, where the truffles are fat and the wine is great. Bruno the policeman is the umbrella of protection for this little town. He’s smart, kind and handsome (I think!).
Wonderfully written and well read.

Historia
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

Charming Detective solves crimes in the Perigord
Revisado: 02-04-25
The story moves at a steady pace—not too fast, not too slow. Of course one loves Bruno, who’s tall, kind, good looking and brilliant. It’s fun to read about mythical St Denis, where the action takes place. He goes the the markets and talks to people, solves crimes. I loved it and will listen to the next in the series

Historia
A Zoo in My Luggage is the colorful, first-hand account of Gerald Durrell's six-month animal-collecting trip in British Cameroon, and his attempts to create his own zoo. Motivated by a passion for wildlife, and a desire to save endangered species from extinction, Durrell assembles a glorious panoply of exotic animals - including a female baboon called Georgina, who later runs amok in a department store; a black-eared squirrel, who tries to bury nuts in his ear; and a gentlemanly chimpanzee named Chumly, who greets him with an outstretched hand.

A Kind and Funny Read
Revisado: 06-15-24
Who couldn’t love Edward Durrel? He is a wonderful story-teller and writer, humorous and laugh-out loud funny, as he tells of collecting animals to start his own zoo. No wonder that the little boy from Corfu grew up to start a zoo and do much for animals.

Today, the US Constitution is the oldest, continually-operating instrument of government in the world. But to think of the Constitution as a fully-formed, canonical document is to miss out on an honest, well-rounded grasp of American history. Now, more than ever, any well-informed citizen should understand how the Constitution lives, breathes, and endures.

Crisp and rich delivery of personalities,
Revisado: 06-06-24
Getting familiar with each of the characters is absolutely fascinating and sometimes magical. Of course one chapter per founding father is just enough to whet one’s appetite for more!
Delivery by the professor is excellent and he has well researched each man, down to some endearing or especially annoying qualities a few of them had. The fathers really came alive to me.

Gripping
Revisado: 09-29-23
The Alice Network was beautifully written and read. The story is fascinating to me, about women managing feats during WWI and WWll. Risking their lives, these girls gather information to be fed to help stop Germans.
I love how the story goes back and forth in one woman’s story, Eve. One gets to know her as a young, innocent woman and also after the wars and the horrific experiences that changed Eve so much. It is a tremendous story, gripping at times. And I imagine there are many such stories—real ones—similar to this one. Brava!

There is something profoundly romantic about lost civilizations. Davies peers through the cracks in the mainstream accounts of modern-day states to dazzle us with extraordinary stories of barely remembered pasts, and of the traces they left behind. This is Norman Davies at his best: sweeping narrative history packed with unexpected insights. Vanished Kingdoms will appeal to all fans of unconventional and thought-provoking history, from listeners of Niall Ferguson to Jared Diamond.

Loves this informative book! Difficult to find these histories. I especially enjoyed the information on old Prussia. It’s difficult to find histories about Germany that don’t focus on the Third Reich! Fascinating reading or listening

Story Well Told
Revisado: 07-30-23
Wonderfully written accounts of several women’s experiences during WWll, while working at Bletchley Park in Great Britain. Fascinating insight into the secret workings in a romantic mansion in the countryside, and also into a women’s often untold but crucial to winning the war!
Characters are dimensional, easy writing style, great descriptions and very likely there are many true stories about ones similar to the characters in this.
Rose Code has whetted my appetite for more WWll stories!

Historia
How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Never having heard of the Wendel family, I was stunned to learn about them, and how much power the family could have amassed had they not spent their energy back biting ea h other and bickering. And all the money dwindled…super story.
Some of the text sounded almost like AI. It bothered me. But the story is worth hearing!
