Starting Over Again

The characters in this novel were redeeming and their struggle is identifiable by many. Childhood family issues can definitely have an impact on adult choices. The development and flow of this story over time gave it credibility. Great read.

Unimpressed

This was a difficult read as I kept waiting for a more adult view from this writer’s troubled and disturbing years of growing up in poverty, neglect, and prejudice. The fact remains that the parents and the writer herself would have some redeeming perspectives as to how they overcame such hardship was lacking. The constant child point of view did not give this writing depth since self reflection was not discernible. While I personally shudder to even think of the frightening recollections and the ultimate impression made upon each of their lives, choice still played a huge part in their decisions to stay and persevere.

Nice story, didn't like narration

Captivating Story

Although I am somewhat familiar with the cultural significance of this story, reading/listening to a first person (fictional) account gave this story depth and meaning. The strength of the characters also gave this story meaning and provokes the reader to search their own heart. From a current perspective, it also initiates empathy towards people that we may not understand or even like. But everyone has a story. This was a compelling read.
