So much experience and incredible accomplishments here! It's such a shame Dean Karnazes isn't recognized for the hero he truly is (it's financial....yes, i get it).

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

TOO MUCH COOKING....BUT TOO GOOD NOT TO READ
Revisado: 06-24-17
If you could sum up The Omnivore's Dilemma in three words, what would they be?
Disclaimer: I'm an author and scientist. I like information-heavy books. That being said...I'm so torn. This book was too long for my liking. Too much cooking shenanigans. Yet I've recommended it to several people. The info in invaluable and worth learning the zen of patience during a long bout of cooking extravaganza.
Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?
I loved his spotlight of Polyface. Joel Salatin is a hero - with some WHACKY ideas - and more people should be listening to Salatin and our country should totally adopt his farming style.
Any additional comments?
Citing a Berkeley researcher, he says C-13 studies indicate that Americans are "corn chips with legs". Freaking hilarious.
Fee range = 2 weeks of open door that chickens don't even use because of habits already ingrained. Also, their feed is infused with kelp for omega. CRAZY!
"Input exchange" is modern organic versus standard farming. Ideal is NO input (fertilizer, pesticides, etc) but careful rotation like Polyface Farm.
"The thing most morally troubling about killing animals is that after a short time, it is not morally troubling."
2 business models emerge here: Commodity business (industrial model, including Whole Foods) needs to exploit scale to cheapen price to compete, and less skilled labor for more mechanicals/tech/fuel. Artisianal is opposite.
Competitive strategy here needs to specializing well and keeping expenses down. Growing for the sake of growth, national markets, advertising, striving for uniformity, and removing skilled labor will all move toward a weak Commodity model (go one way or another).
"The great advantage of being a reasonable creature is that you can find a reason for whatever you want to do" Ben Franklin quote in the animal rights part. Frustration of animals' instincts is a problem. Interesting.

The key to weight loss isn't calories. It isn't fat. It isn't protein. It isn't even carbs. You can count them, cut them, and swap them all you want, but you won't lose weight if you're eating foods that your body can't tolerate. And the most common diet foods - like egg whites, wheat bread, and fat-free yogurt - are some of the worst offenders. These "healthy" foods are actually making you fat! In this book, celebrity nutritionist and fitness expert J. J. Virgin pinpoints the 10 foods that sabotage weight loss. Just by eliminating these 10 diet saboteurs, listeners will see incredible results.

It took me too long to get around to reading this book. It's excellent and still on point. I literally use this diet during my consults with pro athletes and others. This elimination-type diet works, is easy, and the book is simple to understand.

Revisado: 06-24-17
What disappointed you about Bad Science?
Disclaimer: I'm an author and PhD scientist. I'm not Simon Cowell. That being said...I enjoyed Goldacres title. It got me excited! There is a TON of Bad Science, especially on LDL and statin drugs [rabbit models, seriously?!], diet [counting calories? seriously?], chemotherapy as a default treatment for cancer, and so much more. BAD BAD BAD SCIENCE. Also, Goldacres grasp of science seems legit [is this turning out to be a compliment sandwhich? It's looking that way....]. HOWEVER...Goldacre takes biased and conventional view of things like "toxins" and a few other things that discredit the book for me by revealing his bias which is boringly typical. He also missing so much of the TRUE bad science that is out there currently. Like the influence of pharma and governement/corporate agenda!!!!!!!! [just one more...!] These sorts of bias's's's are exactly why we have massive disease and obesity problems that just keep rising....they sow the seeds of confusion. That being said, I enjoyed his information on the placebo effect : ) I also enjoyed how even what the doctor thinks about the pill or the doctor's confidence can have a dramatic effect. There were definitely a few gold nuggets. It just wasn't an entire ACRE of gold. Mostly fool's gold [ok, that's going too far]
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Read Marcia Angell's books and included the biggest, baddest problems with "health" care today. Breast cancer is up 250% people! Let's not start a crusade against "those silly toxin believers"

WHERE'S THE BEEF?
Revisado: 06-24-17
What did you like best about Presence? What did you like least?
Disclaimer: I'm a scientists and author. Now...after being totally inspired by Amy's TED talk - even though it really only contained ONE real scientific study [about testosterone increasing within minutes of changing posture..which, by the way, was DEBUNKED by other scientists] - I kept asking myself, as I read this book "where's the beef"? Not in a perverted way, mind you, but more like that open-minded wooden figure on the book cover [I don't mean for "wooden" to sound perverted either. I know it came out that way but it was innocent, I promise.]. I think this book was too full of fluff - like Winnie the Pooh - with more than a dash of Harvard credentials, and not enough scientific research.

Did The Emperor of All Maladies inspire you to do anything?
I was inspired to STOP about 3/4 of the way through. It was just too long and too much story for me. Disclaimer: I'm a scientist and I enjoy densely informative health info. I'm not so big on the endless narrative and storytelling. You might be!

NOT about American Indians
Revisado: 06-24-17
If you could sum up Tribes in three words, what would they be?
My 3 words were written via "voice" not typed, so pardon my autocorrect and spelling:
I loved this book and learned a lot. Worthwhile investment!
A tribe is a group of people connected by an idea and the ability to communicate it. This is a big part of how we see ourselves and a strong need in humans.
Marketing should not be about advertising because ads are expensive. Marketing should be about engaging your tribe
The more opinionated or partisan your tribe is, the better. This is because those types of people want to create change.
Creating change, light, and nice (sic [what is up with this autocorrect??], is the only way to gain intense disciples or benefactors for your nonprofit.
Telling people what to do dies not create a movement but people communicating to each other within your group does. Better communication up down and sideways is key.
He defines a term called sheep walking. Pretty funny. He says these are people that all their lives have brain-dead jobs just do as you're told type stuff and motivated by fear. Don't hire these types of people.
The best non-profit "donors" are the ones involved, "participants". This SCALES, unlike donors. Recruit people that are not opposition and not yet in a strong tribe. "Not Yet" is the worst thing to hear for commitment.
Seth says the MOST important concept in this book is to FIND leaders, and give them a platform to excel and communicate. This allows them to also plug you.
People rarely listen to strangers. They sometimes listen to freinds'. They always listen to themselves - self narrative. Give them a broad (vague) narrative to latch onto.

GREAT if you have ANGER problems... NOT FOR ME
Revisado: 06-24-17
Would you try another book from Ryan Holiday and/or Ryan Holiday?
No...
Would you recommend The Obstacle Is the Way to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes. Some people NEED this book. People with Anger Issues, this should be #1 on their list.
Was The Obstacle Is the Way worth the listening time?
He makes an interesting point about the meaning of life. He says that life is constantly bringing up challenges. How we respond and act is how we are answering the meaning of life question. People asking "what is the meaning of life" can be seen as presumptuous, as though it is someone else's responsibility to tell you. The world is asking you this question, and it is your job to answer it. In every single situation, life is asking us a question. Our actions are the answer. Obstacles are opportunities 2 improve our actions and strengthen our virtues.
Overall, I got almost nothing from this book. Stay emotionally distant from things. BUT it is a great book to recommend to people that have issues controlling emotion. It is written for "dummies" - simple and clear and slow.

Right away he distinguishes horizontal games versus vertical games. Horizontal meaning just the dissemination of something already out there like globalized computers or phones. When he uses the word technology he means vertical progress.
He has great stuff about the education system and its flaws. I'm a homeschooler so I appreciate this. He talks about how everyone is educated the same way. People that test well are given more approval, they end up defining their own identities based on this weirdly contrived academic parallel reality. People pay massive tuitions in order to compete at the highest levels of conformity.
The true value of a business is the sum of all the profits it will make in the future.
Start in an area that can be monopolized and emerge in the smallest niche possible. This way, you fans will already be interacting with each other. Now they'll open up to you.
Serial billionaires include Jack Dorsey (twitter and square), Steve Jobs, and Elon Musk.
Theil advises VC to only invest in companies that can outgrow your entire fund.
He also believes that you should choose a job based on companies that look like this rising stars - even over starting your own, often.
There is a difference between things that are impossible and things that are just extremely difficult. Finding those things that are extremely difficult and Building Solutions is one way to emerge as a monopoly. It is also a way to recognize Rising Stars.
How well founders of companies work together is a huge Factor.
One of the best tricks he learned that PayPal, was to assign various people only one individual responsibility or one thing. This diminished competition between people. It also gave them clear goals. They knew they would be evaluated on that thing.
For sales rather than for product is usually the reason of failure.
