Another book please!
Revisado: 11-17-19
When this book ended, I was actually upset the 5th book of the series was not out yet. I was so engrossed, I was ready for more. I don't typically read series and when I do, I usually only read past the 4th book out of obligation to finish the series, and not because I actually want the series to keep going. I find that the longer a series goes on, the less engaging the story becomes.
That is simply not true with Gideon and Sirius. I WANT MORE!
The addition of another dog with a bold personality drew me even deeper into the series. And the resurgence of the sidelined sociopath left me eager for this one to continue.

Historia
As the sole members of LAPD's Special Cases Unit, Detective Michael Gideon and his German shepherd partner Sirius work investigations considered bizarre even by Los Angeles's standards. Yet their latest case is more than strange - it might be out of this world. Ronald "Wrong" Pauley is a homeless man long fallen from grace. When Pauley's late-night drinking is interrupted by a detonation of light, he sees what he describes as a "being of light" in the alley below.

AMAZING SERIES
Revisado: 11-17-19
This is the 4th book I have read by Russell and I now consider his one of my favorite authors. His talent for character development rivals that of more popular writers like Grisham. Those that know me know I do not say that lightly.
I do not often read series because I feel like the authors struggle to keep my attention after the first book. That is definitely not the case with this series. Russell grabbed by attention in book 1, and even as I finished book 2, he had never let go.
We once again join Gideon and his loyal partner Sirius as they try to solve some of LA's most confusing crimes. The emotion practically jumps off the page and right into the reader. The characters seem like real people and not just a figment of the writer's imagination.
I can not possibly recommend this series more.

Left me wanting more
Revisado: 11-17-19
I want to start out by saying that I do not usually read series. I prefer stand alone novels. But with a dog and a serial killer in the mix, I was intrigued.
Burning Man is about a cop, his canine partner, and the serial killer they caught. But don't let that fool you into thinking this is a cookie cutter cop book. Burning Man goes beyond just the story and really captures the emotional trauma of a man who nearly died trying to stop a bad guy. The story is captivating to the point that I was almost angry when the book was over, I wanted more. Thankfully, this is an ongoing series.
Once again, I am blown away but the character development. These characters feel like real human beings. Even the dog's character practically leaps off the page, despite not being able to speak.
My only complaint is about the reader. The voices he gives the characters makes them come off as simple caricatures rather than the in depth characters Russell created. But if you can look past the reader, the book is phenomenal.

to me
Unlike most of Russell's books I had a hard time getting into this one, but by chapter three, I was in awe of his ability to create such unique and intriguing plots, the wide variety of well developed characters invokes a sense of familiarity, where the mere mention of the name he feel like he was referring to an actual person and not a character in a book as murder mysteries go this one left out of the cookie cutter mold. And instead of wondering who done it, you were caught up in the thrill of the hunt. My only real complaint is the reader of the audio book, mostly because his voices are inconsistent and seemed more like cartoon stereotypes than in depth creations by the author.
Right out of the gate I was intrigued the creation of Sam McGee by Robert service is a lesser known but that is Lee written poem. My dad often recited it throughout my childhood.
The story was engrossing and kept me guessing, even to the very end, the author seems to have mastered the line between creating rich detail, without taking it too far into the realm of over the chop cheap shocks, like in every book I've read by Russell his characters originally developed to the point of becoming real in my head. The reader on this was phenomenal she grasp the tone of the, the author seems to have intended. The tale was frustrating yet liberating and horrific but hopeful, I loved it.

Perfectly unexpected
Revisado: 02-04-19
There are two things that I prefer to experience when reading a new book: unpredictablity and great character development. The Homecoming delivers on both in phenomenal ways. While I initially thought that I knew where the plot was headed, within a few chapters I had no idea. Rather than be bored as I waited for the plot to go to its expected destination, I was enthralled as the story moved in unforseen directions. I literally was unsure what would happen next or how the book would end.
The characters were full and vivid. Not only were you able to get a sense of who each person was, but also their relationships with each other. Cheever specifically was so well developed that it felt like I knew him. The author was also able to find realistic voices for all of his characters from teenage girls to seasoned politicians. You could feel the emotions in their interactions, and see their relationships grow and develop.
The only downside I saw to this book was the naming of certain characters. The obnoxious, self centered high school girl was named Tiffany, which is a little too calculable. But then again, this is probably a personal bias.
All in all, I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
