Historia
Grady Myers was an artistic but aimless teenager in 1968, when, desperate for troops, the U.S. Army overlooked his extreme nearsightedness and transformed him into Hoss, an M-60 machine gunner. His memoir Boocoo Dinky Dow: My Short, Crazy Vietnam War is by turns funny and sobering. Grady recounts his military initiation at Fort Lewis, where there could be a fuzzy line between training and torture.

Slightly disconnected.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It's a fairly decent representation of the grunts life in Vietnam, but there seems to be parts missing. I'm certain that this is because it's essentially a collection of war stories put together after the authors death. The clear clue I can point to is him referring to a specific helicopter pilot a couple of times as if the reader should know who it is, yet the pilot is never introduced at all.
Would you be willing to try another book from Grady C. Myers and Julie Titone ? Why or why not?
Well, Grady is dead, and Julie is clearly just a friend who gathered up him amnuscripts and got them published, so I doubt we'll hear from either again,
What does Jeffrey S. Fellin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Unfortunately in war stories, sometimes the humor just doesn't translate and 'you had to be there'. That is the case with this book. Though I'm certain that when Grady was telling them, the stories were side splitters, that is unfortunately not the case with the audiobook.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 12-11-14
What made the experience of listening to The Martian the most enjoyable?
The humor of the protagonist really came across via the narrator. He really did a great job of conveying the emotion and frustration in the character, very well done.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?
You want me to spoil it? I don't think so. I will say that I liked this book from the very first sentence. Right then you know it's not going to be your typical story.
Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have unfortunately never experienced any of his other performances. This one is, however, my current gold standard to measure other audio books against.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I never cryed, but I did laugh at several parts. I also couldn't stop listening to it, quite literally. I was pacing as the conclusion played out full of nervous energy and hope.
Any additional comments?
Get this book. Seriously, you won't regret it. It's funny, it's clever, it's irreverent and dramatic. You'll cheer the successes, you'll fret over the failures. The performance is nearly flawless. I can really see myself listening to this again soon.

Historia
Rattler One-Seven puts you in the helicopter seat, to see the war in Vietnam through the eyes of an inexperienced pilot as he transforms himself into a seasoned combat veteran. Soon after the war, Gross wrote down his adventures, while his memory was still fresh with the events. Rattler One-Seven (his call sign) is written as he experienced it, using these notes along with letters written home to accurately preserve the mindset he had while in Vietnam.

An American Square goes to War
Revisado: 12-11-14
Would you try another book from Chuck Gross and/or Gerry Burke?
No. This is the boring memoirs of a uncharismatic pilot read by the winner of a Chris Hansen soundalike contest.
Would you recommend Rattler One-Seven: A Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's War Story to your friends? Why or why not?
Only as an example of what a bad audiobook sounds like. The narrator is monotonous. The author was clearly convinced by someone that he should never use contractions. I do not know if they did this as a joke, figuring that some editor would eventually convince him it was a bad idea, or what. He sure stuck to his guns though, because there is not a single one and I would have noticed because after a while that is the kind of thing that is really hard to miss. It makes for a very choppy dialogue, and also serves to make the author and main protagonist sound even more pretentious and straight laced than they already were.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Gerry Burke?
Gerry read this book with all the fiery passion of Chris Hansen reading a transcription of a 'chat log'. Monotonous, steady and boring, though I'm sure the manuscript is partially to blame. Also, the Vietnamese city of Hue, is pronounced more like 'whey' instead of like a colors hue.
What else would you have wanted to know about Chuck Gross’s life?
Nothing, not a thing. I know too much already. Chuck doesn't seem like a very exciting guy. He's, sorry, 'he is' probably a decent pilot, but he seems to have the charisma of a graham cracker.

A solid telling of classic apocalypse fiction
Revisado: 11-26-14
What made the experience of listening to Alas, Babylon the most enjoyable?
The voice narration was very well done. The story was good, if a bit exagerated and naive in places.
What other book might you compare Alas, Babylon to and why?
I would loosley compare it to The Earth Abides in that they're both post-apocalypse fiction and deal with the troubles of rebuilding a community of sorts. In Alas Babylon, they're quite a bit more restricted in movement due to the radioactive areas around them. Other than that, they both deal with having to make do without modern conveniences, though they do try to continue on with them as long as possible. Both books mildly address a return to primitive ways.
Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't listened to any of his other performances, but I did like this one quite a bit. He did a very good job developing voices for the various characters in the story and it was easy to keep track of who was who for the most part. Female characters are always a problem for male narrators and this performance suffered in that regard also.
Any additional comments?
A classic post-apocalyptic tale with a very solid voice performance. I would highly recomend this.
