Delightful interesting story about a henna artist / herbalist in India. Also a story about feminism & family. Lots to learn in the story without being too preachy. Sometimes predictable it was a throughly enjoyable story.

Awesome BUT they should be UNabridged!!!
Revisado: 05-28-12
These stories are perfect fun filled interesting adventures. The stories are full of rich language & interesting twists & turns. This is like a Lord of the Rings for kids (and adults too) but the descriptions are what makes the story so extraordinary. Even abridged they are great stories, well worth the listen. HOWEVER, there are many stories in this series for the reason that part of the story is the side-story and the back-story. These stories go forward & backward in time and the readers & listeners WANT to know and HEAR ALL the details. Best to have the stories mad UNabridged, as the first few in the series were. Yes, the stories take 3x as long to listen to, but that is the point, we want the WHOLE story not a short version, otherwise we would not choose to read & listen a series. It is a GREAT story with wonderful language. The books have amazing drawings too. I recommend if you listen to the books, check out a print copy from the library so you can view the drawings; one you see them you will understand.

Historia
Young Twig lives in the Deepwoods, among the Woodtrolls, but he isn't one of them. In a brave attempt to find out where he belongs, Twig wanders into the mysterious, dangerous world beyond the Deepwoods. He meets a collection of odd companions, such as his wise guardian, the Caterbird; the Slaughterers, a peaceful race who butcher animals for their livelihood; and the vicious, bile-swilling Rotsucker.

UNabridged is BEST! We love the story & narrator
Revisado: 05-13-12
These are awesome stories. The reader is great. The story (when read or listed to) takes a while to get into but it is both complex and fascinating. Enjoyed by my 4 kids (age 7-14) & me. The UNabridged stories in this series are best! We don't understand why they also have abridged versions, in those the stories flow but so many wonderful details are left out. It is worth buying or checking-out the paper copies also because the illustrations are out of this world. GREAT!

My daughter loved it!
Revisado: 11-22-11
I bought this for our long car drives to school.
My 7 year old daughter loves the story and followed it closely.
When her older brothers were in the car they found it interesting too.
The narrator makes the story especially interesting.
We listened to all three books in this series.
The story is told entirely from the point of view of dolls.
MUCH more interesting than most books for kids of this age!
Enjoyable.

Historia
Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life - having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Through Balram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo and, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, the white tiger.
With a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, Balram teaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve every problem.

Long story made enjoyable!
Revisado: 11-22-11
This book was "assigned" for my book club.
I didn't have time to read so I bought the audio.
Because the narrator is from India, the speaker gave the story authenticity with his accent and musical speech.
The story was fun to listen to.
It is a modern and compelling story.
Well worth listening to!
