When I started reading and listening to the book, I had to remind myself that this was not a fiction book, as it was written so well, it read differently than the other books on addiction. My loved one has been in treatment for a year and so I am in not a place of crisis. Having the mother and daughter both wrote was brilliant. When our kids are in the depths of addiction, they are certainly not communicating in a way we can understand, so having Mia’s perspective was eye opening. When Claire, the mother, shared her parts, I either thought, “Oh I remember that.” Or “Isn’t it crazy how many commonalities there are between families deep in addiction.” The best for me was how Claire shared her reflective thinking about herself and the responses from the therapists and fellow parents. It put me in a place of self reflection as well and has helped me to see similar things in myself, which allows me to continue my journey. I could not have read this book early in my journey, as I was either in crisis, wasn’t working on myself, hadn’t had enough wins, or was trapped in negative thinking. The thought of picking up something like this would make me cry. So for parents that are further along in your journey, this is a great book to read/listen to.
